Pentagon reviewing program to train Syrian rebels

The Pentagon is urgently trying to figure out what to do with its flailing train-and-equip program, which is aimed at preparing moderate Syrian rebels to fight ISIS.

Some 70 trainees, the second group to enter the program, are expected to complete it in the next several weeks, but it’s not clear what will happen at that point.

The concerns come in the wake of an Al Qaeda attack on a small group of the first US trained and equipped rebels in northern Syria.

The review is expected to determine what changes, if any, need to be made, according to several defense officials.

Officials are looking at whether the 70 rebels currently in training should be sent back to a safer area inside Turkey where that Al Qaeda group may not be located. For now, no significant changes in policy are expected.

“The program has been disappointing on every level,” one defense official told CNN. “We are taking a careful look at what is going on.”

Several rebels fled after the attack at their compound, as many as five were believed to be captured, and some never even made it to the compound, having gotten stuck in Turkey and unable to make it across the border. Others are believed to have possibly deserted or been captured as well, since they have not been seen since finishing training.

So far, the only US military commitment to the rebels is that if they come under attack, the US will provide defensive airstrikes. The current US policy is to continue to insist the rebels fight ISIS and not the Assad regime.

EXCLUSIVE: ISIL Preparing to Launch Chemical Attack on Al-Shadadi

The ISIL has transferred chemical substances to the city of al-Shadadi in the countryside of Hasaka as the Takfiri terrorist group is preparing to launch fresh attacks on Hasaka.

“The ISIL militants were unloading plastic barrels of chemical materials from the trucks and they did not allow the civilians to get close to them,” informed local sources told FNA on Tuesday.

They noted that ISIL is preparing for a surprise attack on Hasaka city.

Abu Mohammad al-Adnani, the ISIL commander in al-Shadadi, has ordered the foreign ISIL militants to be stationed in their positions near al-Shadadi in preparation for the chemical attack.

In June 2013, Russian journalists, who were in Syria, said there was no doubt that the foreign-backed opposition fighters and terrorists have used chemical weapons in attacks in the vicinity of the Syrian city of Aleppo on March 19, 2013.

These Russian journalists handed over some videos to the United Nation Secretariat. The videos showed the foreign-backed fighters of the opposition forces had used chemical weapons in attacks in the area of the Syrian city of Aleppo.

The report about these videos, which were handed over to the United Nation Secretariat by these Russian journalists were already confirmed by the spokesman for Deputy UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq, Syria News reported.

Farhan Haq said the videos showed the “opposition fighters” used chemical weapons in their attacks on March 19. The information will be given to Oke Selstemu, who is the head of the UN experts investigating the possible use of chemical weapons/weapons of mass destruction in Syria.

On Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on establishing the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) to identify and bring to justice individuals and organizations responsible for chemical weapon attacks in Syria.

According to the resolution, the UN secretary general and the OPCW are to submit recommendations regarding the establishment of the mechanism to the Security Council within 20 days after the adoption of the resolution.

A mission to eliminate Syria’s chemical arsenal was announced after a deadly gas attack killed hundreds outside Damascus in August 2013.
Syria in Last 24 Hours: Army Repels Terrorist Attack on Sweida Province
The Syrian army pushed back another massive raid by the foreign-backed terrorists in Sweida province.

The army units thwarted terrorists’ attack on Buthina field, 35 kilometers to the Northwest of Sweida city, FNA dispatches from the province said.

The Syrian troops destroyed the terrorists’ strongholds and their vehicles equipped with heavy machine guns.

Also in the past 24 hours, the popular committees in Syria along with the army forces killed over 300 terrorists in Kafaria and al-Fouah districts in the Northwestern province of Idlib.

The terrorists were members of Jeish al-Fath group who had sneaked into Idlib province in recent months.

The popular forces also launched a massive offensive against militants’ positions in Kafaria and al-Fouah, seized a tank of the Jeish al-Fath terrorist group and held a number of its members captive.

Meantime, the Syrian army and the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance forces on Tuesday regained control of Major buildings in Damascus countryside.

The Syrian army troops, in cooperation with Hezbollah fighters and popular defense groups, regained control over 11 buildings in North and East of al-Zabadani city.

The forces continued to advance towards the city center, and killed tens of terrorists.

Elsewhere, the Syrian army thwarted terrorists’ infiltration attempt into the city of Daraa.

A military source said that the army killed and injured hundreds of terrorists, including 5 self-proclaimed leaders, and destroyed their vehicles during the operation.

Meanwhile, the Syrian troops killed and injured all members of a terrorist group at the Northwest of Atman town in the countryside of Daraa.

A group of Takfiri terrorists were also killed in military operations in Yadouda (5 km North of Daraa) and Nassib towns, and Ghariya East and West in Daraa countryside.

Elsewhere, Syria launched air strikes against several positions of the foreign-backed Takfiri militants in the countryside of Lattakia on Tuesday, leaving a large group of the dead.

The air strikes destroyed terrorists’ weapons depot, an explosive devices factory, and killed a number of terrorists in Rabee’a town in the Northern countryside of Lattakia.

The Iraqi army and the popular forces made new gains in Ramadi in Al-Anbar province, Western Iraq, and completed the siege of the ISIL Takfiri terrorists in the city.

“The ISIL has been besieged from all angles in Ramadi,” Brigadier General Ahmad al-Bilawi, an Iraqi military Commander in Ramadi, said on Wednesday.

This is for the first time that the Takfiri terrorists have come under all-out sieged as Iraq’s joint forces are showing stronger resolve to win back the city.

Earlier today, the military sources said that the Iraqi Army and the Shiite Volunteer Forces of Hashd al-Shaabi have continued their joint operations against strongholds of the ISIL Takfiri terrorists in Ramadi.

“The Iraqi forces alongside Hashd al-Shaabi militia are advancing against the ISIL rebels in the Northern and Eastern sides of Ramadi,” Head of the security committee in the Khalidiyah Council in Anbar province Ibrahim Fahdawi said.

“The Iraqi army men and Shiite forces have advanced from the Northern front against the militants and have reached the outskirts of Jirashi between Abu Diab area and Anbar Operations Command,” said Fahdawi, adding, “The security forces have also advanced in the East and from the direction of Husaybah and al-Madyaq regions.”

In late July, the ISIL terrorists started fleeing Ramadi to save their lives after sustaining heavy casualties in initial clashes in Ramadi.

Popular and military sources in Iraq said ISIL members had lost morale after the recent victories of the popular troops in Al-Anbar province and were fleeing the city of Ramadi.

The Iraqi army and the volunteer forces won back control over strategic hilltops in the Eastern parts of the city of al-Ramadi.
