Putin at Valdai Forum 2015 – World between War and Peace

Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed political and business leaders at the annual Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi, Thursday Oct 22, 2015.

Putin blamed the US in demolishing of the international security system. “Under a pretext of missile-nuclear threat from Iran, as we all know, fundamental basis of contemporary international security – Treaty on the Limitation of Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems – was destroyed. The US withdrew unilaterally from it,” he said, adding that “Iranian nuclear problem has been solved. There is no threat from Iran and as we have said before there has never been.”

Vladimir Putin :

“With the appearance of nuclear weapons, it became clear that there can not be a winner in a global conflict. The only result that could be is guaranteed mutual destruction. In attempting to create more and more destructive weapons, people have made a large-scale war meaningless.”

It was about trying to change strategic balance of power in their favour in order not only to dominate but to have an opportunity to dictate their will to everybody: both to their geopolitical competitors and I think their allies. This is an extremely dangerous scenario which is harmful for everyone including the US, I think.”

“We had the right to expect that work on development of US missile defense system would stop. But nothing like it happened, and it continues.”

“The deterrent of nuclear weapons has started to lose its value, and some have even got the illusion that a real victory of one of the sides can be achieved in a global conflict, without irreversible consequences for the winner itself – if there is a winner at all.”
