Iran Criticizes Int’l Community’s Silence on Crisis in Yemen

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian lashed out at the international and human rights bodies for keeping mum on the dire situation of the Yemeni people and the continued Saudi-led airstrikes on Yemen.
“The continuation of warmongering policies and the silence of the international community about Yemen have provided an opportunity for the growing trend of the new terrorist currents in Yemen, which is worrying,” Amir Abdollahian told reporters in Beirut on Monday.
He said that those countries that support the Saudi-led aggression against Yemen and contribute to its continuation come to know that there will be no winner in Yemen, but the Yemeni people.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister strongly criticized the UN for its inaction to end the sufferings of the Yemeni people caused by the Saudi-led aggressions.
On November 18, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a meeting with UN special envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed underlined the necessity for stopping the Saudi-led military strikes against Yemen.
During the meeting in Tehran, Zarif stressed the importance of the United Nations’ role in finding a political solution to the crisis in Yemen.
Tehran supports all the measures by the UN to resolve the conflict in Yemen and calls on all the Yemenis to make every effort to smooth over the situation in the country, he said.
“Months of aggression and military approaches have led to nothing but the destruction of Yemen’s infrastructure and the death and injury of the innocent people of the country,” Zarif added.
Cheikh Ahmed, for his part, maintained that the warring sides in Yemen have shown “very positive attitude” to discuss UN Security Council resolution 2216, which demands an end to the violence in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen for 250 days now to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 7,028 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.
Hadi stepped down in January and refused to reconsider the decision despite calls by Ansarullah revolutionaries of the Houthi movement.
Despite Riyadh’s claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.
