Instead, Johnson told Casor he was extending his time of servitude. Casor left Johnson’s estate anyhow, and sold his services to Johnson’s neighbor Robert Parker.
Anthony Johnson sued Robert Parker in a Northampton court in 1654. In 1655, the court ruled that Anthony Johnson could hold John Casor indefinitely, in a life of servitude without limit. The court gave judicial sanction for blacks to own a slave of their own race, thus Casor became the first permanent slave in America and Johnson, a former slave, the first lifetime slave owner.
