What comes after Palmyra?

The liberation of Palmyra (Tadmur) by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has opened the door to a long list of options for the government forces, including a possible offensive to liberate the Al-Raqqa Governorate. However, the odds of the Syrian Arab Army pushing north towards Raqqa City is very unlikely at this stage of the war, given the fact that their forces are currently besieged by the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) inside the Deir Ezzor Governorate. The Syrian Arab Army’s Central Command has already announced their intentions to liberate the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor Highway in order to lift the 10 month long siege of Deir Ezzor; and while this may see like the government’s main priority at this time, it is truly just a small part of their military contingency after Palmyra.

Syrian Army on high alert after ISIL amasses fighters in Deir Ezzor

The recent liberation of Palmyra (Tadmur) by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has applied intense pressure on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorists in eastern Syria, forcing them to consolidate their positions in preparation for a large-scale assault by the government forces.

However, ISIL does not appear to be backing down anytime soon; instead, they have recently amassed a large force of fighters inside the Deir Ezzor Governorate after losing a significant portion of the Homs Governorate over the last two weeks. According to a military source at the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, the Russian Air Force conducted a number of reconnaissance missions over Deir Ezzor, capturing images of ISIL’s movements around this aforementioned province in eastern Syria. Despite ISIL’s large loss of life during the Syrian government’s offensive in Palmyra, they were able to retain a significant amount of fighters before the city fell; this was an important thing to do in order for them to continue their war against the Syrian Army. On-the-other-hand, the Syrian Arab Army inside Deir Ezzor will have to forestall the terrorist group’s advance in order to provide ample time for their allies in Palmyra to lift the siege on the city.

Syria in Last 24 Hours: Army Wins Back Ancient City

The Syrian army and popular forces managed to seize back the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur) from the ISIL’s control in Homs province in the last 24 hours.

The Syrian government troops are now fortifying their positions in Palmyra city.

The ISIL terrorists sustained heavy losses and casualties as a large number of them were trying to flee eastwards towards Deir Ezzur.

The Syrian army also continues its advances in other key provinces across Syria.

Homs

The Syrian army and popular forces in a major conquest seized back the ancient city of Palmyra in the Eastern part of Homs province after several days of tough battle with the ISIL terrorists.

The Syrian government troops are now in full control of Palmyra city.

The ISIL terrorists sustained heavy casualties and losses in fierce clashes with the Syrian government troops.

Palmyra was under ISIL control from May 2015. The terrorist group has since destroyed part of the city, which is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Syrian and Russian air forces are pounding the convoys of the ISIL terrorists as they are trying to flee the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur) eastward towards Deir Ezzur and al-Badiya regions, battlefield sources said.

The Syrian and Russian fighter jets are hitting the ISIL convoys while they are escaping Palmyra from Palmyra-Sukhneh axis, Palmyra-Mahatta al-Thaletha highway, Palmyra-Tweinan and al-Rasafa-Tabaqa roads.

Military sources reported on Saturday that a large number of terrorists and their families are fleeing the ISIL stronghold city of Palmyra (Tadmur) as the Syrian army troops alongside popular forces are only inches away from a major conquest and winning the ancient city.

Battlefield sources said the ISIL Takfiri terrorists are in such a rush that they have “left behind their dead and wounded friends and fled their positions in Palmyra”.

The ISIL’s mass escape comes as the Syrian army continues its advances towards Palmyra city center from the Western side of the ancient city where they could penetrate the ISIL’s defense lines on Wednesday and made headway in bloody clashes with the terrorists.

Hama

The Syrian army and popular forces continued their advances in Hama on Sunday, and won back two more key regions in the ISIL-controlled territory in the Eastern part of the Central province.

The army units and popular forces took full control of two new regions in the Western part of Aqareb dam and Tabaret al-Deibeh in heavy clashes with the ISIL terrorists.

Scores of ISIL terrorists were killed and wounded in heavy clashes with the Syrian government troops. Three military vehicles of the ISIL equipped with heavy machineguns were also razed down by the Syrian army.

Aqareb region is located about 30 kilometers to the East of Hama city.

The army’s engineering units defused the bombs and mines which were laid by the terrorists in the two regions.

Aleppo

The Syrian army and popular forces thwarted an attempt by the terrorist groups on a key military base in the city of Aleppo after two hours of fierce clashes with the militants on Sunday.

The Takfiri terrorists attempted to attack Hanano military base in Aleppo city from Aghyor region, but they were pushed back by the timely counteroffensive of the Syrian government forces.

The fierce clashes between the army units and the terrorists lasted over two hours which resulted in the death of more than five terrorists.

The Syrian army is preparing for large-scale operations to regain control of the strategic strongholds in the Northern parts of Aleppo province, media reports said.

Syrian army is planning to take back control of several positions from the Al-Nusra Front, the ISIL and Ahrar al-Sham Takfiri terrorists, the Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news channel reported.

The Syrian army military operations to win back Aleppo province came to a halt after the ceasefire in Syria and after breaking the four-year siege of Nubl and al-Zahra towns in Northwestern Aleppo.

Damascus

Field sources in Damascus province revealed intense infighting between the al-Nusra Front and ISIL terrorists in al-Qalamoun region which resulted in fatalities on both sides, including a senior ISIL commander.

Abu Azam, an ISIL field commander, and his men were killed in Jaroud al-Jarajir area in Al-Qalamoun.

The al-Nusra Front captured several ISIL-controlled military positions in these clashes.

Iraqi Popular Forces Cut ISIL’s Strategic Iraq-Syria Supply Route

The Iraqi popular forces cut ISIL’s main supply route from Iraq to Syria after seizing two more important regions near the city of Sinjar.

The Iraqi forces took full control over the strategic Um al-Diban and Um al-Jaris regions in the Northern parts of Iraq.

The ISIL sustained heavy losses, including losing several of its armored vehicles.

Um al-Diban and Um al-Jaris regions are located in Sinjar countryside near Iraq-Syria borders and they were regarded as one of most important supply routes of the ISIL from Nineveh province in Iraq to Hasaka and Deir Ezzur provinces in Syria.

On Thursday, the Arab media outlets reported that the Iraqi Army and popular forces have begun military operations to retake the Northern province of Nineveh from ISIL.

It said that the Iraqi forces have already liberated several villages in the district of al-Makhmour and Mosul, which has been under ISIL’s control for two years.

The Northern and Western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since the ISIL terrorists began an offensive through the Iraqi territory in June 2014.

Iraqi army soldiers and popular forces are now seeking to win back these occupied regions in joint operations.

Last Tuesday, Nineveh Province Operations Commander Brigadier General Najm al-Jabouri announced that the ISIL positions in Mosul were under the army’s heavy fire, underlining that his forces were waiting for an order to launch the final battle.

“The Central and Southern parts of Mosul which host the ISIL commanders’ strongholds are under artillery fire and airstrikes,” Jabouri told FNA.

He said that the Iraqi army and popular forces were all prepared for their commanders’ order to launch a decisive battle against the ISIL in Mosul.

A source in Iraq’s Ministry of Interior announced last Friday that the Iraqi Air Force’s planes dropped thousands of leaflets on the city of Mosul (405 km North of Baghdad), calling on the residents to be prepared for the liberation operation of the city by the Iraqi army.

The source said in a statement that “today the Iraqi Air Force planes dropped thousands of leaflets on Tahrir neighborhood, as well as different parts in the left side of Mosul”.

The source, who asked anonymity, added, “The leaflets called the citizens to be prepared for the expulsion of ISIL terrorist members.”
