Lavrov: Russia demands that Turkey withdraw its troops from Iraqi territory

https://www.rt.com/news/344973-lavrov-turkey-iraq-kurds/

The presence of Turkish armed forces in Iraq without invitation is unacceptable, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a Tuesday interview, in which he also questioned why the West has turned a blind eye to Ankara’s violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

“We demand that Turkey withdraw its troops from Iraqi territory, where they are deployed, as former Turkish Prime Minister Davutoglu put it, to ‘strengthen’ Iraq’s sovereignty. This position is absolutely unacceptable,” Lavrov told Komsomolskaya Pravda daily.

Russia’s Western partners and Turkey’s allies from NATO should pay much greater public attention to Ankara’s activities in the region, Lavrov noted, adding that currently NATO’s stance is that Turkey is a member, so they will sort things out among themselves.

“What about Cyprus, which is not a NATO member and whose airspace is violated by the Turkish Air Force on a regular basis? And secondly, what kind of a position is that – if you are a NATO member, you can do whatever you like? ” the Russian FM asked.

In Iraq, Ankara is realizing Turkey’s “neo-Ottoman aspirations” and pursuing certain economic goals, Lavrov said.

“[The Turks] reckon on getting a foothold there somehow and waiting for a battle for Mosul to lay claim to the [oil] fields and wait for a reaction from the international community,” he added.

Lavrov also said that Moscow will continue to demand that Turkey stop causing chaos in Iraq, in the first place against the Kurds.

As part of its efforts to counter terrorism in the region, Russia provides Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan with weapons “with the consent from the Iraqi government,” Lavrov stressed, adding that “we apply no other principles.”

Earlier, the Russian foreign minister said that fighting terrorism must be conducted in rigorous compliance with international legal norms and with the absence of “double standards.”

Peshmerga Forces Advance Towards Iraq’s Mosul Against ISIS

Iraqi Peshmerga Forces Seize 120 sq/km of Land from ISIL East of Mosul

Iraq’s Kurdish Peshmerga forces managed to kill tens of ISIL militants and capture 120 sq/km of land from the ISIL terrorists to the East of Mosul.

“After three days of intense fighting, Peshmerga forces managed to seize 120 square kilometers of territory, containing nine settlements, to the East of Mosul,” a Kurdish Peshmerga representative Amir Sherifi said on Wednesday.

Some 5,000 Kurdish fighters participated in the military operations.

The Peshmerga engineering forces are dismantling the explosive devices in liberated areas.

On Tuesday, the Iraqi Kurdish forces foiled an attack on their defense lines by the ISIL a day after the Peshmerga concluded a major operation against the radical group on the al-Khazir front, killing and wounding at least 24 militants, a military official said.

“Before Dawn, ISIL launched an attack on Peshmerga defense lines, but they were immediately defeated after a fierce fight,” said a Peshmerga commander, Rudaw reported.

The commander said the ISIL militants attacked the Peshmerga stationed on a plateau near the villages of Mufti, Zara Khatun, Wardak and Hassan Sham.

An senior ISIL member known as Abu Zaid was killed in the confrontations in which the group employed two car bombs.

The villages where the militants mounted Tuesday’s attack are Kakei and Shabak villages that were taken back by the Peshmerga in a two-day operation involving around 5,000 soldiers.

Earlier, an informed source within Peshmerga in Nineveh Province announced the killing of 140 ISIL elements during military operations in the past two days in al-Khazir Northeast of Mosul.

Report: ISIL Kills Militants Wounded in Fallujah Battle

The ISIL terrorist group has resorted to killing its militants wounded in Fallujah battle, media reports said.

“Our forces have gained access to the ISIL leaders’ conversations and communication exchanges in which they asked for help and ordering the killing of the wounded militants,” the Arabic-language Sumeria News quoted Sayed al-Shohada Battalions Secretary General Abu al-Ala Alvani as saying on Wednesday.

Alvani, meantime, said in a statement that his forces have managed to complete the phases 1 and 2 of the winning back al-Karmah region.

“The engineering units are purging the recently seized back districts in Fallujah city of the ISIL terrorists in order to pave the way for people’s return to their homes,” he added.

On Monday, Iraqi health officials disclosed that the ISIL terrorist group has resorted to a new method to get rid of its wounded militants and kills those wounded in Fallujah battle by giving them lethal injections.

“The ISIL has given potassium chloride injection to its wounded terrorists to kill them,” the Arabic-language media quoted an informed source in Fallujah hospital as saying.

The source noted that the ISIL has killed dozen of its injured terrorists who were hospitalized in Fallujah hospital, and said, “Potassium chloride results in patients’ heart attack.”

Also on Monday, the Iraqi security forces advanced towards the center of the city of Fallujah as they clashed with the ISIL over taking control of al-Tafaha bridge.

The Iraqi forces maintained full control over al-Shihah region and are now clashing with the ISIL terrorists in al-Saqlawiyah town to the West of Fallujah city.

An estimated 600-1,000 ISIL terrorists with the exception of their allied tribal fighters are stationed in the Fallujah city.

The Iraqi government troops entered the Jolan neighborhood as they gained control over al-Saqlawiyah region.

Meantime, the Iraqi army seized back al-Naimiyah region to the South of Fallujah.

The Iraqi forces have besieged Fallujah from four directions and the ISIL can only escape through al-Zawiyah region.

Also on Monday, the Iraqi forces entered Fallujah, one of the terrorist group’s key strongholds in Iraq after completing a troop buildup around the city.

“The operation to enter Fallujah began on Monday morning,” an Iraqi official told journalists who entered the city with the Iraqi security forces.

The Iraqi military officer said the government’s military units began advancing in the city of Fallujah, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of Baghdad, with explosions and heavy gunfire reportedly heard in Fallujah’s Southern Naimiyah district.

Iraqi government-led forces launched an offensive to dislodge ISIL militants from Fallujah a week ago, and have been slicing through ISIL positions ever since. The terrorist group still controls territory in the North and West of the country, including Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul.

Major Dhia Thamir told media on Sunday that Iraqi troops had recaptured 80 percent of the territory around the city since the operation began last week. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi also said, during a televised speech to parliament, that the “current second phase of the Fallujah operation” will last less than 48 hours.

The large-scale assault, carried out by the Army, police counterterrorism units, local tribal fighters and a coalition of Shiite Muslim militias, continues on all fronts around the city. Besides making vast gains in the North, forces, aided by US advisers, have also been advancing on the city from the Sinjar direction.

“We are moving in the right direction. We are killing those criminals,” a police unit fighter told RT last week, adding that approaches to the city are mined.

Fallujah, which survived some of the heaviest fighting of the 2003-2011 US-led military intervention, was the first city in Iraq to fall under ISIL control in January 2014. In late June, 2014, the extremists declared a caliphate in territories seized in Iraq and Syria.
