Iraqi army advances on ISIL near Fallujah

Iraq: Hundreds of ISIL Terrorists Killed in Fallujah Operations

A senior military commander announced that a large number of the ISIL terrorists have been killed since the beginning of the operations to liberate the city of Fallujah in Anbar province.

“Over 500 Arab and non-Arab ISIL militants have been killed since the operations kicked off in May,” Commander of Fallujah Liberation Operations major General Abdulwahab al-Saedi told reporters on Monday.

He noted that the Iraqi troops have managed to enter phase 1 of al-Shohada region in the Southern part of Fallujah after killing 42 ISIL terrorists in heavy clashes.

Earlier on Monday, it was announced that 42 members of the ISIL terrorist group were killed during the Iraqi forces’ operations to liberate the Mahallah al-Shohada Avval region in Fallujah.

The Fallujah Liberation Operations Command Center made the announcement in a statement on Monday, adding that a number of other terrorists were also wounded during the operations in the Southern parts of Fallujah.

“The Iraqi forces are now preparing to attack al-Nazal district, one of ISIL’s main headquarters,” the statement added.

Earlier reports said today that Iraq’s army secured the first “relatively safe” exit route for civilians attempting to flee the city of Fallujah amid operations by the government forces to retake key areas from the ISIL terrorists.

According to Brigadier General Yahya Rasoul, who is the spokesman for the Joint Military Command, an exit route, known as al-Salam (Peace) Junction, was secured Southwest of the city.

“There were exit routes previously, but this is the first to be completely secure and it’s relatively safe,” media outlets quoted Rasoul as saying.

Iraqi forces have been engaged in a major offensive to free Fallujah, located in the Western province of Anbar. The large-scale push for the liberation of the city started on May 23.

Latest reports indicate that the forces have recently pushed back the terrorists from the strategic areas of Subeihat and Falahat, West of the city.

‘Road of death’ to Aleppo pounded as air strikes cut off rebel areas

REUTERS/Rodi Said By Tom Perry and Suleiman Al-Khalidi GAZIANTEP, Turkey/AMMAN (Reuters) – The opposition-held sector of Syria’s divided city of Aleppo has been cut off from the outside world in recent days by an escalation of air and artillery strikes on the only road in, putting hundreds of thousands of people under effective siege. A government campaign to fully capture Aleppo would most likely bury what little hope remains of reviving a diplomatic effort to end the five-year-old civil war, after talks and a ceasefire sponsored by the United States and Russia fell apart earlier this year. Aleppo, Syria’s largest city before the war when it had more than 2 million people, has been divided for years into rebel and government sectors, and capturing all of it has been one of President Bashar al-Assad’s biggest goals.

An estimated 350,000 people are still thought to live in the rebel sector, in harsh conditions made worse by the latest attempt to besiege them by cutting off the last remaining route out, the Castello Road, named for Aleppo’s old castle. “The regime was not able to cut the road by land, so it has decided to keep the planes in the sky continuously, hitting everything that passes, regardless of what it is,” said Zakaria Malahifji, senior official in the Aleppo rebel group Fastaqim. “Whoever wants to go on the Castello road is undertaking a suicide mission,” he said. “It’s been this way for 10 or 12 days. The situation was difficult before – it was targeted and people were crossing with difficulty – but now it is almost cut, nobody dares to use it,” he said, speaking at his group’s office in the Turkish city of Gaziantep near the Syrian border.

The international focus in Syria in recent weeks has partly turned toward the conflict with Islamic State fighters, as both the government and its enemies have made gains at the expense of the ultra-hardline Islamist militants on several fronts. But the separate hope of foreign powers — that the wider civil war could also be resolved — has broken down, with Aleppo potentially the biggest battlefield of all. Hundreds of people have been killed there since peace talks broke off. Assad vowed in a speech last week to recapture “every inch” of Syria. Aleppo, he said, would be a “graveyard” for the ambitions of his regional foe, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who has backed rebel groups.

A pro-Damascus source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the reference was a signal of his intentions: “Why this threat? Because there are preparations for something big in Aleppo.” Russia had intensified air strikes in agreement with the government and its other allies to encircle rebels in the Aleppo area, including in the city itself, said the source who is familiar with the strategy. So far, pro-government ground forces, aided by Iranian and Lebanese Shi’ite militias, have been unable to complete the encirclement of Aleppo by capturing a narrow corridor of territory through which the Castello Road passes.

Syria in Last 24 Hours: Army Destroys Militants’ Concentration

The Syrian army pounded the military positions and gathering centers of the Takfiri terrorists in Raqqa province, inflicting heavy losses on them.

Scores of Takfiri terrorists were killed and wounded in tough battle with the Syrian government forces in Raqqa province.

The army units also continued their military advances in other parts of Syria, including Homs and Aleppo, over the past 24 hours.

Raqqa

The Syrian Army troops and National Defense Forces continued to push the ISIL back from more positions and restored security to more lands near al-Tabaqa region.

The Syrian government forces hit the ISIL defense lines near the villages of Harbiyat and Anbaj in al-Tabaqa energy-rich region.

The Syrian army and its allies registered very good records of victories against the ISIL and liberated at least 57 kilometers of Ithriya road to al-Rasafeh in Easter Badiyeh (desert).

Battlefield sources have announced that al-Safih triangle located near al-Habbari oilfield is now under the full control of the Syrian army and its allies.

Homs

The Syrian army fended off an attempt by the Takfiri terrorists to prevail over the recently liberated town of al-Quaryatayn in the Eastern part of Homs province.

“The ISIL terrorists were trying to once again open its way into al-Quaryatayn, but they were pushed back in a swift reaction of the Syrian forces,” an informed battlefield source speaking on condition of anonymity told FNA on Sunday.

The source noted that the ISIL terrorists were trying to pave their way into al-Quaryatayn town through its adjacent hilltops.

Meantime, the Syrian soldiers and National Defense Forces (NDF) tracked and targeted two groups of ISIL terrorists in Northern Homs, inflicting major losses on them.

The NDF missile units opened heavy fire at the Takfiri groups’ positions in the Northern side of Kafarnan and near al-Mosamakeh, which ended in destruction of the terrorists’ military hardware.

Damascus

Syrian army soldiers repelled ISIL’s attacks to break through the government forces’ strongholds in Eastern Ghouta, forcing the Takfiri terrorist group to pull back its fighters from the battlefield.

The ISIL attacks on the government strongholds in Tal Arinabeh in al-Badiyeh were repelled by the Syrian army men.

At least seven military vehicles of the ISIL were destroyed in the failed attacks.

Two bomb-laden suicide vehicles and explosive materials of the ISIL were also exploded in the unsuccessful attacks.

The Syrian army, meantime, engaged in heavy clashes with the terrorists of the ISIL in Jazal, which claimed the lives of over 10 militants.

The Syrian Army troops fended off ISIL’s attacks on government forces’ positions near the strategic Dumeir Airbase Northeast of Damascus, inflicting a heavy death toll on the terrorists, military sources said Sunday.

“The ISIL terrorists began their assault by storming the army-controlled Badr Base, resulting in a series of intense firefights that persisted for more than three hours,” the sources said, adding, “The Syrian army beat back the ISIL assault at the Badr Base.”

Aleppo

A top ISIL commander was reportedly killed in clashes with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Um Mayyal village on the road between Aleppo and Manbij in Northern Syria, Kurdish sources said.

“We have collected corpses of 24 ISIl militants who were killed in the clashes, including their commander Dahham al-Hussein,” the official said.

Al-Hussein was appointed by the ISIL as an Emir (prince) in Um Mayyal village and he was in charge of the group’s military operations in Western Manbij.

Reports said earlier on Sunday that the fighters of Manbij Military Council, affiliated to the SDF, repelled ISIL’s attacks on its positions near the town of Manbij Northeast of Aleppo, inflicting a heavy death toll on the militants.

The SDF fighters fended off the ISIL attacks in the region between the villages of al-Sultaniyeh and al-Hamdouniyeh one kilometer to the West of Manbij.

In the meantime, the ISIL attacked the SDF positions from three directions near the village of Madana, but the strong defense of the SDF fighter forced them to retreat from the battlefield.

Unofficial reports claimed that at least 69 ISIL terrorists were killed in the unsuccessful attacks on the SDF strongholds in the Western, Northern and Northwestern sides of Manbij.

Also, the SDF fighters, in their cleansing operation near the village of Kabarjeh al-Kabireh found 21 bodies of dead ISIL fighters.

“The ISIL launched their attack from the Dakwah direction, which is located directly South of the Badr Base,” the sources said.

“The ISIL left behind scores of the dead and wounded members and fled the battlefield under the heavy fire of the Syrian military forces,” they went on to say.

A senior commander of Ahrar al-Sham terrorist group was killed in an explosion in the Northern part of Idlib province on Sunday, media reports said.

Omar Ahmad al-Haji nom de guerre Abu al-Khatab lost his life in an explosion near the town of Tormanin in Northern Idlib, the Arabic-language Ara news website reported on Sunday.

Al-Haji was a physician who at the same time was head of al-Rih al-Morsala Hospital in the town of Dareh Gaza in the Western part of Aleppo.

The number of Ahrar al-Sham commanders killed in areas under their control, specially in Idlib province, has recently increased.

Dara’a

The Syrian military forces engaged in heavy fighting with al-Nusra Front terrorists in two Southern and Central districts of Dara’a city, local sources said, adding that the terrorist group suffered heavy casualties in the clashes.

“The Syrian army soldiers stormed the strongholds of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front on the Southern side of al-Manshiyeh neighborhood in Dara’a al-Balad, killing all the terrorists in the site,” the sources said.

“In the meantime, al-Nusra strongholds in the Southern side of Kark square in Dara’a al-Mahatta, which ended in the killing or wounding of several terrorists,” the sources said, adding, “The army also repelled al-Nusra attacks on military posts of the government forces in Dara’a al-Mahatta, and forced the militants to retreat from the battlefront without any gain.”
