Stupid NRA Responds to Stupid Donald Trump’s Really Stupid Tweet

This morning, Donald Trump proved why it was so ridiculous for the NRA to endorse him for President, and why he is, as we have said over and over, totally unreliable and not trustworthy and not credible on protecting the Second Amendment. In short, he made himself, and them, look like idiots.

Here, for a refresher, is the stupid Tweet:

I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns.

The many ways in which this is a stupid thing to say are too much for this post. Read Leon’s article on the topic. Also enjoy the countless exceptional replies to the Tweet. There are many good responses. There are so many good ways to respond it is a veritable smorgasbord of excellent replies.

But instead of those, here is the NRA’s response:

Fairfax, Va.— The executive director of the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action, Chris W. Cox, released the following statement regarding terror watchlists:

We are happy to meet with Donald Trump. The NRA’s position on this issue has not changed. The NRA believes that terrorists should not be allowed to purchase or possess firearms, period. Anyone on a terror watchlist who tries to buy a gun should be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and the sale delayed while the investigation is ongoing. If an investigation uncovers evidence of terrorist activity or involvement, the government should be allowed to immediately go to court, block the sale, and arrest the terrorist. At the same time, due process protections should be put in place that allow law-abiding Americans who are wrongly put on a watchlist to be removed. That has been the position of Sen. John Cornyn (R.-Tex.) and a majority of the U.S. Senate. Sadly, President Obama and his allies would prefer to play politics with this issue.

Hey, at least they didn’t cave on the issue altogether. But look at the preposterous last line, for example. “President Obama and his allies would prefer to play politics,” on it? Nice deflection (note, it wasn’t that nice) from the fact that Trump 100% adopted Obama’s politics-playing position. You might as well have listed him among Obama’s allies.

In fact, you should have done just exactly that. ‘President Obama and Donald Trump and their allies would prefer to play politics with this issue.’ Trump, as we have repeated a thousand times here at RedState, is at the whim and mercy of political correctness. Oh yes, he’ll say insulting things and his fans will act as if their glorious king has fought the battle of the century and won, but lobbing insults isn’t really that hard or impressive. Especially when you can’t even do it right (it’s FAUXcahontas you Philistine).

But on major issues he loves to go where the wind blows. Because Donald Trump craves attention and approval. And he enjoys being provocateur. And plus his terror response has been going badly for him so he had to do something to get few good news stories from the gun control media.

The NRA’s response was mainly factual. The watch list issue is a complicated one and despite that fact that it is inconvenient to the fear caucus, the constitutional, legal, ethical, and moral issues of depriving someone of their rights without due process and based only on the opinion of politically-motivated gov’t agencies cannot just be swept aside in the interest of “doing something.” Or even in the interest of “please improve my poll numbers.”

The NRA’s response was nothing. Their endorsement was stupid. And Trump is an idiot. There, you’re all caught up.
