Farid Khavari: “Racism, corruption and incompetence in Miami-Dade County Mayoral race.”

Mayoral candidate Dr. Farid Khavari, the noted economist, author and environmentalist, today warned Miami-Dade County voters that the big-money candidates in the race completely ignore major problems that threaten the very existence of the county.

“Saltwater is entering our aquifer, threatening our only drinking water supply. Sewage is spewing into the ocean, making it unsafe to swim. Sea level rise is already happening,” said Khavari.

“FPL’s Turkey Point nuclear plants have cooling problems that could lead to a Fukushima disaster. The local economy is a mess. Wages are low, unemployment is high. Parts of the county are like ghost towns of deserted stores and commercial buildings. Over 35% of residents have no access to health care except the emergency room which costs us hundreds of millions per year. I have plans and solutions for these problems. But none of my opponents even mention these issues.

“Instead, we have politics as usual. The Miami Herald has printed many stories about corruption and cronyism in Mayor administration. Then they gush about the millions of dollars Gimenez has raised from his cronies, as if that makes him a good candidate. Then they endorse him. This is a guy who wants to sell the county’s water system to a private company!

“When asked about my positions on the issues, the other ‘establishment’ candidate Raquel Regalado simply said, ‘Dr. Khavari is not Hispanic.’ Her plan is to travel to Tallahassee and Washington and charm the legislatures and bring back money to the county—to do what?”

Khavari noted that Gimenez is supported by county contractors and lobbyists who have poured over $4.5 million into his campaign “to keep control of the $7.5 billion county budget, and keep the gravy train rolling for them, while ignoring the interests of the other 2.5 million residents of the county.” Regalado is supported by unions and billionaire car dealer Norman Braman “because they want to take over driving the gravy train, with no more concern for 99% of residents than Gimenez,” Khavari said. Khavari’s campaign is self-funded.

“We can’t afford another four years of corrupt crony politics in Miami-Dade County. If we don’t act now, one day saltwater will come out of the faucets, and it’s all over.”
