You know what 2016 needed? The official website of a presidential candidate explaining a meme that has been co-opted by white supremacists who support Donald Trump. Luckily for all of us, that is exactly what happened.
Why is there a frog standing directly behind Trump?
That’s Pepe. He’s a symbol associated with white supremacy.
Wait. Really? White supremacy?
That’s right.
Please explain.
Here’s the short version: Pepe is a cartoon frog who began his internet life as an innocent meme enjoyed by teenagers and pop stars alike.
But in recent months, Pepe’s been almost entirely co-opted by the white supremacists who call themselves the “alt-right.” They’ve decided to take back Pepe by adding swastikas and other symbols of anti-semitism and white supremacy.
To give them credit, it’s not a terrible hit. Pepe the Frog, annoying meme that he is, has indeed been co-opted by the alt-right as a means of spreading their racist agenda. The fact, however, that explaining memes is happening in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Sixteen is just further proof that this election is terrible.
Of all the things you want to hit Donald Trump on, you choose a meme. You choose something that probably 95% of your voting base has never seen before and has no care in the world about. That’s your issue? The Republic is doomed.
