How do you propose change to someone who feels he’s perfect?
Trump is, after all, the man who claims he’s never asked God for forgiveness, because he hasn’t done anything to require forgiveness.
That’s perfection, achieved only one time before in the history of mankind.
Thankfully, only Trump sees himself as having reached that level of perfection, and some of his surrogates are tentatively making suggestions for improvement.
“He has gotten himself to the edge of the mountain. He can get himself to the top of the mountain, but to do that he has to be willing to make real change,” Gingrich, a Trump supporter, told The New York Times.
Gingrich, once thought to be a likely VP pick for Trump, has been making small mewlings of protest in the media, lately, regarding Trump’s erratic, campaign-killing antics.
Some of those latest antics include his attacks on Alicia Machado, the former Miss Universe, from Venezuela.
Trump took the bait offered by Hillary Clinton in the first debate and has doggedly refused to let it go, drudging up issues that serve no real purpose to his campaign and only make him look more unhinged and misogynistic.
Talk of a woman’s weight gain – never a winning issue for any man, much less a presidential candidate – her porn involvement, or any in that line of attacks will not win him new or undecided voters, which he desperately needs, at this point.
“He has to decide that the presidency is worth drilling into,” Gingrich told the Times.
“With the possible exception of Eisenhower, nobody in modern times has become president without making” major changes to their approach, he said.
“I really want him to understand that he can win this,” Gingrich said. “He is the one person who can beat him — not Hillary.”
And that is the problem.
Hillary Clinton is wildly unpopular and any other Republican candidate would have easily walked away with this race, by now, but Trump is poison.
We’re long into the point where it is no longer an issue of whether he can beat Hillary.
Gingrich and the other Trump surrogates, as well as the GOP top brass need to face the very real possibility that what they’re seeing is because he doesn’t want to beat Hillary.
