Donald Trump certainly has his fair share of fanatics but he also has many supporters who don’t care for him much and are only voting for him because they feel they have no other options. Those people have been lambasted and shamelessly insulted for that decision, accused of being obtuse because “the lesser of two evils” is not an acceptable voting strategy. These competing sentiments are ripping apart the Republican base.
However, it is not just Republicans who are making these kinds of decisions. Last week noted famous person Oprah Winfrey was on T.D.Jakes’ show talking about politics and Hillary Clinton. When responding to the idea that Clinton isn’t likable enough for some people, Winfrey expressed disdain and frustration.
There really is no choice, people.
She not comin’ over to your house. You don’t have to like her. You don’t have to like her…
All the people sittin’ around talkin’ about they can’t decide…I hear, this all the time, you get in a conversation….There’s not a person in this room who hasn’t been in the same conversation, where people say, “I just don’t know if I like her.”
Two things about Winfrey’s rant stand out. One is that we’ve been spending so much time talking about all the people who don’t like Trump that what’s been completely lost is how many liberals and Democrats don’t like Hillary. The talk show host suggested that pretty much everyone on her side of the political aisle has had a conversation about not liking Hillary. Not necessarily a ringing endorsement.
The second thing that stands out is that she feels she has no choice as a voter. If the only other option is Trump, she’s going to use her vote to stop that. This is why I refuse to tear down good people (who aren’t #TrumpTrain maniacs) who have come to the agonizing decision to vote for Trump. They are viewing the election the same way Oprah does. They see it as critical choice with no in-between. In both cases, people are casting their votes out of fear instead of hope.
This election sucks.
