Battle for Mosul Day 20: 165 Regions Liberated by Iraqi Forces

Iraq’s military offensive to liberate the city of Mosul from ISIL militants continued on Saturday with the Joint Military Command of the Iraqi Armed Forces saying that the army and its allies have liberated 165 regions from the control of the ISIL terrorists since the start of the military operation.

165 Regions Liberated by Joint Forces in Battle for Mosul

The Joint Military Command of the Iraqi Armed Forces said on Saturday that the army and its allies have liberated 165 regions from the control of the ISIL terrorists since the start of the military operation to retake the militant-held city of Mosul.

“Since the start of the military campaign to liberate Mosul, a number of 165 regions, villages, districts, neighborhoods, and government facilities in Northern, Southern, Western and Eastern Mosul have been retaken from the terrorists control,” Iraq’s Joint Military Command said in a statement.

The commander of the Iraqi ground forces, Riad Jalal Tawfiq, also noted in remarks published on Saturday that the army forces are preparing for an impending offensive on Mosul’s al-Qahira district, which is one the main Northern districts on the Eastern bank of the ISIL stronghold city.

Iraqi Forces Expel ISIL from Six Neighborhoods in Mosul

The Iraqi forces were able to recapture six neighborhoods in Mosul City after hitting ISIL key positions there, forcing the group to retreat towards the city center.

“Subsequent to clashes with ISIL terrorists, our Counter-Terrorism Units liberated the neighborhoods of Malayan, al-Samah, al-Khadraa, Karkukli, al-Quds and Karama,” the Iraqi Army General Command said in a statement, ARA News reported.

In the meantime, clashes continued between the Iraqi forces and ISIL militants in the al-Zahraa District of Mosul city.

Iraqi Army Lays Siege on ISIL in Southern Mosul

Iraqi volunteer forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) is recapturing more lands to the West of Mosul as the country’s army laid siege on ISIL terrorists South of the city, a senior commander announced on Saturday.

“Hashd al-Shaabi has seized back over 56 villages since the beginning of the Mosul liberation operation,” the Arabic-language media quoted Senior Hashd al-Shaabi Commander Javad al-Talibavi as saying on Saturday.

Meantime, he said that the Iraqi army and federal police laid siege on the ISIL terrorists in Hamam al-Alil market to the South of Mosul city.

Iraq’s Flags Hoisted on Buildings in Last ISIL Bastion South of Mosul

Iraqi Security forces entered the Central districts of Hamam al-Alil town and hoisted the Iraqi flags on the government building in the last ISIL stronghold South of the city of Mosul, Iraqi police said.

Iraq’s Federal Police Chief, Raed Shaker Jowdat said in a statement that his forces have seized back control over three more villages Southwest of Hammam al-Alil.

“Iraqi police forces liberated al-Zaftiyeh, al-Taqtaq, and Sanaeik villages in Southwestern Mosul and an ISIL commander known as Abu Bakir was killed during clashes in the area,” the statement said.

Iraqi Official Sees Hype about Al-Baghdadi’s Voice Message

Head of the Iraqi Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee Hakem al-Zameli said a recently released voice message of ISIL Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is a plot hatched by Turkey’s spy agency to give an excuse to Ankara to send troops to the city of Mosul in Nineveh province.

“The Turkish military forces will arrive in Mosul on the pretext of fighting terrorism before the ISIL leaves for Turkey,” al-Zameli said.

Hashd Al-Shaabi Takes Full Control of Mosul-Raqqa Roads

Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces Hadi al-Ameri said volunteer forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) have seized full control of the ISIL-controlled roads linking the city of Mosul in Iraq to Raqqa in Syria.

“We have expanded control over the strategic Tal al-Zalat intersection and seized control over vital roads and supply routes, including Tal Afar-al-Mohlabieh-Mosul road,” al-Ameri, who is also the Badr Organization Secretary General, said on Saturday.

He noted that volunteer forces have also imposed control over the strategic Tal Abteh to al-Ba’aj road which was the most important route of the ISIL to Syria.

Syria in Last 24 Hours: Army Repels Attacks on Gov’t Positions in Eastern Damascus

Syrian army soldiers beat a number of Fatah al-Sham (formerly the al-Nusra Front) terrorists back from their positions in the Eastern countryside of Damascus after hours of clashes, inflicting major losses on them.

The Fatah al-Sham terrorists’ attacks to capture the government forces’ positions in the Eastern Ghouta in Damascus province were fended off by the strong defense of the Syrian military men.

Meantime, the Syrian army and popular forces continued their military advances in other parts of Syria, including Dara’a and Aleppo, over the past 24 hours.

Tens of terrorists were killed and dozens more were injured during the Syrian army’s operations in Syria’s key provinces.

Damascus

Syrian army troops repelled a major attack by the terrorists on their positions in Western Ghouta after inflicting a heavy death toll on invading foes.

The Fatah al-Sham Front (formerly the al-Nusra Front) sustained a great loss in fighters and military grid and was forced to retreat at the end of a major assault on the positions of the Syrian army in Southwestern Damascus.

Hama

Syrian army troops pushed back terrorists’ attacks on their key positions in Northern Hama and won back land in separate clashes in a nearby region.

Syrian Army men drove terrorists out of Zahrat al-Aliyeh region and some parts in the Northwest of Tal Bazam region in a Friday raid.

In the meantime, other army units fended off terrorists’ attack on their positions on Souran bridge from the al-Tibeh direction and a separate assault by another militant group who sought to open their way from al-Zareh village to al-Madajen, inflicting major casualties on the militants.

Aleppo

The government forces repelled Jeish al-Fatah’s offensives in the Western part of Aleppo city, and inflicted heavy casualties on the militants.

The terrorist groups have declared the start of the second phase of their large-scale operations to lift the army’s siege of the militant-held districts of Aleppo. The second phase, codenamed Azwat Abu Omar Saraqib, started after the first phase, ‘Great Epic Operation’ with around 16,000 militants attacking the Western and Southwestern Aleppo districts from last Friday to Wednesday, ended with a major defeat and loss of nearly 2,500 fighters for the terrorists.

Syrian solider and popular forces repelled terrorists’ offensives on their positions in Zahiyeh al-Assad district, Military Academy, Menyan neighborhood and New Aleppo district, killing at least 17 and wounding several more today.

Syrian soldiers also fended off terrorists’ attack and targeted two BMP vehicles of them in the 3,000-units housing complex, while a bomb-laden suicide vehicle and a machinegun-equipped vehicle of the militant were targeted by the Syrian government forces in the New Aleppo districts.

Homs

Syrian warplanes carried out several combat flights over terrorists’ positions in, at least, four different regions in Northern Homs, inflicting major damage and heavy casualties on the militants.

The Syrian fighter jets launched heavy airstrikes on terrorists’ bases near the town of al-Rastan, Northeast of the village of Deir Foul, and the villages of Abu al-Tabaibir and Khan al-Serreh, destroying several military vehicles.

In the meantime, a few hours before the start of the Friday’s humanitarian pause in Aleppo city, the Syrian army aircraft targeted terrorists’ bases in Khan Touman, al-Rashedeen 4 and their movements in areas West and Southwest of the city, killing a number of militants.

Dara’a

Syrian Army troops destroyed the terrorists’ command center in the Southern district of Dara’a al-Balad in Dara’a city on Friday.

The Syrian Army struck a base on the Eastern side of al-Mesri square that is used as a command center by the terrorists, destroying the base and inflicting several casualties on the militants.

The terrorists’ concentration centers in the neighborhoods of al-Abbasiyeh and al-Bahar in Dara’a al-Balad and on the Northern side of the town of al-Yadoudeh in Western Dara’a, killing several militants and destroying their vehicles.

Reports said earlier on Friday that Syrian Army troops targeted terrorist groups’ concentration centers in at least three neighborhoods of Dara’a, inflicting major losses on their sites and equipment.

Syrian army soldiers engaged in heavy fighting with terrorists in Katakit building, Northeastern side of old Customs department in Dara’a and Jalin town in its countryside, destroying militants’ sites, hideouts and military vehicles.

The terrorists suffered several casualties in the fighting.
