No, We Should Not Get Rid of the Electoral College

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

From the moment that it started looking like Donald Trump would win the presidency, but Hillary Clinton would take the popular vote, a collective groan could probably be heard across the country from anyone who remembers the election of 2000 or those of us who understand why we have the Electoral College. The hew and cry from the left that the Electoral College needs to go the way of the dodo bird were sure to start again, and indeed it already has.

Of course, that’s the worst idea for presidential elections ever.

I know it’s, like, so not cool to think that our Founders had any real clue what they were doing when they drafted the Constitution, because racist, slaveholding, white, old guys wrote it. But they actually had very good reason for not having the president (one of only two nationally elected offices — the other being the Vice President, at the time) elected via purely democratic means. The Founders were concerned with the government representing the American population, but also wished to avoid the perils of straight democracy that they knew had brought down great republics in the past. The electoral college was their answer, and it’s served us well for over 200 years.

Those who call for it ending A) don’t have a grasp on history, the Constitution or electoral politics, and B) fail to recognize how little it’s been used (only three times prior to 2016, since 1791) and how well the concept behind its existence has served to benefit the minority from a tyranny of the majority.

Our Founders created a federalist system of  states coming together to create a whole. That meant that most law and control would be held by state and local governments, and was the key to the federalist model. However, states have been relinquishing their influence for awhile now. It’s a trend loathed by many, including myself. Repeal the 17th, anyone? Electoral College is one of those few instances where individual states still hold power and a smaller state can matter. This makes Californians and New Yorkers nearly apoplectic that they can’t simply hold a vote and ignore anyone in less populous, or dare I say it? Rural areas.

It’s too ironic not to enjoy the way the left loves and champions all things minority and fairness until it runs into something like the Electoral College that acts as a check against straight, unruly populism, and from the electorate potentially electing a corrupt individual.

Or, perhaps, the system worked exactly the way it was created to, and our Founders knew what they were doing and had the historical knowledge of human nature and societies to have the prescience to establish an electoral buffer between the voting public and the presidency.

Just maybe.

if you do your homework you’ll find that a few years ago trump himself said the electoral college should be scraped. now, of course, he and his supporters commend it. now you can add flip-flopper to racist, sexist, misogynist, rapist, liar, micro-penis, illiterate and demagogue.

A few years ago I would have said we needed to elect Presidents by popular vote. Then, I saw the GEMS system in 1/4 of our voting machines, which can count your vote as a fraction of a vote, or as a multiple. Depending on who is supposed to win.

Now, voting machines in one CITY can swing a close election.

Mr. Trump is not illiterate. (I’ve never seen him misspell “scrapped,” and you have.)

Mr. Trump is not a demagogue. His policy proposals, and arguments in support of them, are most reasonable.

Mr. Trump’s anatomy is not any concern of mine.

To get any sympathy from me, someone saying “rape” needs to say it right away, and to the police.

And I hope you’re not considering the fraudulent civil suit that was filed during the campaign, a couple of decades after the alleged crime. And then dropped as soon as a court date was set. The case was so obviously phony, the lawyer didn’t dare walk into a court of law with it. She would have been fined by the judge.

I suspect “racist” to you means anybody who wants to uphold our immigration laws. Or who notices that we have a lot of crimes being committed, by people who have no right to be here.

I was shocked to see liberals calling Trump’s African-American supporters “oreos” and “white on the inside.” To me, that’s both racist and condescending.

I suspect you called Sarah Palin names, when she was running for Vice-President, but you don’t consider yourself to be “sexist” or “misogynist” on account of it.

And if I tell you a show on Comedy Central called Ann Coulter the c-word about 40 times, you will answer as my liberal acquaintances did. They said she IS one. To me, that is both sexist and misogynist.

Oh well, take your liberal buzz words and go incite yourself.

        Forget your meds today?

This is probably well beyond your comprehension abilities, but I will try to explain anyway.

Education is cumulative, and as people accumulate information they are know to, now and again, change their minds.

You can probably add all kinds of lies to the list of things you can call President Trump, talk radio and television have a long list, and the internet has a far longer list.

That certainly doesn’t mean any of it is true.

You calling President Trump “illiterate” is like Mickey Rooney calling John Wayne “squirt”.

The electoral college is the epitome of democracy. It insures that each state has a say in who their federal overseers are. Without the electoral college 2 states could consistently decide who runs the country.

The electoral college being done away with in favor of the popular vote would be more devastating than Lincolns end to states rights was.
