Trump Considering Special Session of Congress to Repeal Obamacare

There have been mixed reports about President-elect Trump’s feelings about Obamacare and what to do with it. He has promised to repeal it, but has remarked about keeping some parts of it.

Congress, too, is ready to repeal and replace it, with Paul Ryan stating “Obamacare is failing. It must be replaced. We’re going to do that. We’re excited about it … We can fix what is broken in health care without breaking what is working in health care.” Ryan is also interested in keeping some provisions.

But that the law as it stands, and the plan as President Obama envisioned it and democrats wrote it, are a total, abject failure is in no doubt whatsoever. The only doubt and uncertainty that remain are over what to do with it. Will they repeal it? Will they bail it out?

Kellyanne Conway, Donald Trump’s historic campaign manager appeared on “Fox News Sunday” yesterday and said that Trump is considering calling for a “special session” of Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act altogether.

“(Trump) has talked about convening a special session on January 20 after he is sworn in as President of the United States to do this very thing, to repeal and replace Obamacare,” Conway said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“It would be a pretty remarkable move,” she added.

The 115th Congress will already be in session at that time.

Trump stated previously on the campaign trail, at a rally in Pennsylvania, that he would convene a “special session” of Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare. However, it is clear that with Republican control of the House, the Senate, and of course the White House, there is no “special session” needed or required.

If this is more like when a town forms a “blue ribbon committee” to investigate something, dressing up normal procedure as something special, unique, historic, and a show of power, well you know what? It’s not a bad idea.

The Democrats routinely put on big theatrical numbers for their signature legislative goals, even staging sit-ins, parades and more. If, as President, Donald Trump decides to call congress repealing and replacing Obamacare a “special session” that’s fine by me. As long as they actually do it.

After all, getting rid of a humongous disaster and replacing it with something that makes sense would be pretty historic for our government. Pretty darn near unprecedented. You might even say … “special.” Mightn’t you?

You know, if they go through with it. It ain’t January yet.
