Trey Gowdy Slams the Media for Blurring the Lines Between News and Opinion

“As a member of the least popular profession on the face of the Earth, I think it would do [the media] well to analyze why they would be increasingly giving us a run for our money as to who the least popular entity on Earth is.”

That’s one of the comments the popular South Carolina Representative Trey Gowdy made against the media Monday night at a Concerned Veterans for America event according to the Washington Examiner.

He also worries, like many, that the media is too concerned about being first than being right.

“I think there is a blurring of the line between the opinion page and the news page,” he said. “And I can take you to the headlines of almost any website on the Internet right now, and you will say, ‘well that’s opinion, that’s subjective, not objective.’”

We have seen this over and over again, but it’s not just a coverage issue. Rep. Gowdy gets to the heart of the issue:

“They have quoted this person who’s wrong, and this person who’s equally wrong, therefore it’s balanced.”

But they’ve done they’re job, right! No.

Presenting equally false sides doesn’t mean any truth is found in it.

Opinion journalism is subjective, but that doesn’t mean it is fact free. However, places that consider themselves “straight news” outlets, like CNN, have long shown their bias in subtle ways.

Rep. Trey Gowdy isn’t wrong. The media is supposed to be the thing that keeps the government in check and free of selling its soul to one side or another. The fact that the media is so distrusted shows that they have just become another of those things that cannot be trusted in the modern age. Continuing as they are is a mistake they seem hell bent on continuing.
