Syrian Army Inches Closer to ISIL-Held Al-Bab in Eastern Aleppo

Syrian Army troops continued to advance against ISIL in Eastern Aleppo and managed to take control over more towns, approaching the defense lines of terrorists near the town of al-Bab.

The army soldiers engaged in fierce clashes with ISIL, seizing control over the town of Rasm al-Sarhan to the North of the town of al-Moltafeta in the Northern direction of Kuweires airbase after hours of non-stop fighting and inflicting major losses on the terrorists.

The army men also clashed fiercely with ISIL in a region Southeast of Aleppo and won back the town of al-Qotbiyeh, expanding their chain of security to the South of Kuweires.

A field source said that the army units in the town of al-Madyouneh, backed up by the army aircraft, engaged in heavy fighting with a group of ISIL terrorists, repelling their attack and destroying their military vehicles.

The source added that over 40 terrorists were killed and several more were wounded in the clashes.

Military sources said on Monday that the army troops, backed up by the country’s Air Force, drove ISIL out of almost 90 square kilometers of lands in the Eastern territories of Aleppo province.

The sources said that the army launched operation with the back up of the warplanes to take back the surrounding areas of Kuweires airbase and then liberate the towns of Deir Hafer and al-Bab.

They added that the government forces freed approximately 90 sq/km of territories in their anti-ISIL operation in Eastern Aleppo.

The army’s operation in Southern al-Bab resulted in the liberation of over 25 villages and towns, while the Euphrates Shield Operation led by Turkish army and Ankara-backed militants in Northern and Western outskirts of al-Bab was partially halted.

Field sources pointed out that the Syrian army would reach al-Bab’s gates in the next few days, underlining that reinvigoration of security to Sheikh Najjar region in the Northeastern outskirts of Aleppo and Kuweires airbase were objectives of the Syrian soldiers’ operation in Eastern Aleppo before going to Al-Bab.

The sources added that al-Bab is of strategic importance and can be considered as the key to the Eastern part of the province, adding that al-Bab and Deir Hafer are the gates to Raqqa province and their liberation will pave the way for the army to take back Raqqa, the ISIL’s self-proclaimed capital in Syria.

Brigadier General Iraj Masjedi, a senior advisor to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Commander Major General Qassem Soleimani, declared that the Iraqi army and popular forces have purged all regions near Mosul of terrorists, saying that the ISIL is now under the siege.

“At present, all cities and villages near Mosul have been fully cleansed and the (army and popular) forces are reinforcing their units to set Mosul fully free,” General Masjedi said on Tuesday.

Masjedi has been named in earlier news reports, and by himself, as Iran’s new ambassador to Baghdad but the Iranian foreign ministry has not yet confirmed his appointment.

Noting that the Iraqi forces have cut off the ISIL’s connections from behind as well as its supply routes from Iraq to Syria, he said, “The ISIL is under full siege.”

His remarks came as the Iraqi warplanes airdropped tens of thousands of leaflets over the city of Mosul in Nineveh province on Tuesday, declaring that the country’s army will start a new phase of military operations against the ISIL terrorist group in the coming days.

The residents of Mosul have been informed in the leaflets that the army’s military operation in the Western part of the city is imminent.

The report came as Iraqi forces say they are progressing steadily in the operations to liberate the ISIL-held city of Mosul from its terrorist occupants.

After months of preparation, Iraqi army soldiers, backed by volunteer fighters and Kurdish Peshmerga forces, launched an operation on October 17 to retake Mosul from ISIL terrorists.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has vowed that Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and ISIL’s last urban stronghold in the country, will be fully recaptured soon.
