Jordanian Parties Warn US against Plan to Move Embassy to Occupied Jerusalem

Different political parties in Jordan warned new US President Donald Trump of the catastrophic consequences of honoring his campaign pledge to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

The Jordanian parties, including the Communist, Baath, Ikhwan al-Muslimoun’s political branch and al-Hashd parties, all condemned the US administration’s decision to move the country’s embassy to Beit al-Moqaddas (Jerusalem), calling on the Arab countries, specially Amman, to stand for a tough reaction to the move.

The Jordanian political parties warned of the dire outcomes and dangers of moving the US embassy to the occupied Jerusalem, and said such a measure can set fire to the entire region.

The warnings came as Jordan administers the holy al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem al-Quds.

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has warned the United States against the relocation of the embassy, saying all American embassies in the Arab world would have to close in the face of popular Arab outrage that follows such an action.

PLO Secretary General Sa’eb Erekat said on December 19 that the potential move would deliver a death blow to any prospect of the resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and would have his organization rescind all agreements with Tel Aviv.

Earlier, the Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations said he could make the life of US diplomats “miserable” should Trump move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.

“If they try to attack us by moving the embassy to Jerusalem, which is a violation of Security Council resolutions and a violation of Resolution 181,… it means they are showing belligerency against us,” Riyad Mansour said in November.

“Maybe I cannot have resolutions in the Security Council” — likely due to a US veto — “but I can make their lives miserable every day by precipitating a veto on my admission as a member state,” he said.

“Nobody should blame us for unleashing all of the weapons that we have in the UN to defend ourselves, and we have a lot of weapons in the UN,” Mansour added.

In September, Trump, who was the Republican presidential front-runner at the time, promised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he would recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s undivided capital if he emerged triumphant in the US presidential election.

Palestinians Warn of ‘Intifada’ over US Embassy Move to Jerusalem

Palestinians living in Jerusalem said the US President Donald Trump’s pledge to move US embassy from Tel Aviv will trigger an ‘explosion’. Palestinians also warned of the possibility of an “Intifada”, or uprising, if Trump pushes ahead with his plan to move the US embassy to the contested city of Jerusalem, Middle East Eye reported. The new US president has pledged to relocate the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv in a move which looks set to change the balance of forces in the region and compromise any future prospect for a Palestinian-Israeli peace deal.

Israel claims Jerusalem as its capital but most of the international community refuses to recognize any part of Jerusalem as Israeli territory and considers Eastern Jerusalem to be part of the illegally occupied Palestinian territories. The transfer of the US embassy in the city would signal a massive change in attitude in Washington. Speaking last week, prior to Trump’s inauguration, a spokesperson for the incoming president said an announcement regarding the embassy was “coming soon”.

The proposed move has sparked widespread concern among Palestinians, with protests taking place last week in the occupied West Bank.
