(Before It's News)

Artist Joy Villa made a huge splash at the Grammys on Sunday when she showed up on the red carpet wearing a “Make America Great Again” dress. As expected the backlash was swift and ugly.

Villa’s designer, Filipino-American Andre Soriano said he’s a “proud American” who loves his country and the opportunity it has afforded immigrants like himself. He told The Hollywood Reporter that the gown was a message of positivity.

“It’s more so about love,” he said of the red, white and blue gown. “We all live on this planet. I’ve never been in the political area. However, it’s just so crazy that people are getting beat up because they voted for Trump, or this and that, someone wants to bomb the White House….I am an American, I moved here from the Philippines and I highly believed in the trueness of what this country can bring. It’s about bringing people together, that’s the message.”

Trump Derangement Syndrome’s biggest side-effect is blindness, so it may be hard for many hysterical Americans suffering from the terrible disease to accept that many, many immigrants and minorities in this country voted for President Trump and actually support his various platforms. Soriano and Villa may have been trying to to kick up some controversy for a little red carpet attention (it’s her “thing”; last year’s dress was basically orange construction netting), they do both seem to be sincere in their politics.

We’ve been hearing a lot about the boycotts and anger springing up around anyone with the last name Trump or anyone associated with the Trump brand. Villa may have inspired some people to turn off her music, but it seems that she’s inspired many others to do just the opposite.

Shortly after her red carpet appearance Villa saw a notable spike in iTunes sales and she jumped from 20,000 followers to over 70,000 followers on Twitter in the span of two hours.

Her album “I Make the Static” shot to number one on Amazon Digital, rocketing right past Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” and it currently stands at number two on iTunes. That is an incredible jump in visibility for an artist few people had heard of before Sunday night.

The mainstream and their gleeful reporting of the temper-tantrum boycotts of Ivanka Trump’s products would have us all to believe that being associated with Trump in any way is dangerous and will only have negative consequences. However, they forget that half this country propelled the man into office in an unprecedented victory. That’s a lot of consumer power.

It looks like Joy Villa isn’t just talented, she’s very savvy. Congratulations to her and her designer, Soriano for figuring out how to capture the attention of millions of Americans in the span of minutes. I have no idea how talented she is at making music, but she definitely deserves the Grammy Award for Best Troll Artist 2017.
