Well, We Almost Got Out of Super Bowl 51 With No Politics

We thought we’d pretty much avoided most of the political crap during the Super Bowl.

It was a hard fought, overtime win for the New England Patriots. A second half rally saw them tie up the score and eventually win it all.

Don’t just be happy with that. Be gracious about it.

For most part, it seems they are, but there’s always that one Debbie Downer, isn’t there?

Patriots tight end, Martellus Bennett, won’t be making the customary post-Super Bowl win trip to the White House to meet the president.

“I’m not going to go,” Bennett told reporters Sunday night after the Patriots’ historic comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Asked why, he responded, “like I said, you know, it is what it is. People know how I feel about it. Just follow me on Twitter.”

The nine-year NFL veteran endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and has repeatedly criticized Trump. He said earlier this week he likely would not show up at a White House celebration if his team won.

“I don’t support the guy that’s in the house,” Bennett said when asked to explain.

You don’t have to support him, but be a team player. This isn’t about you and it’s not time to make a political stand. Attending this doesn’t negate your opinions, nor is it about honoring Trump. This is a celebration of your team’s accomplishments.

As it is, quarterback, Tom Brady, and team owner, Robert Kraft are friends of Trump.

Does that mean Bennett could face some pressure for his stand?

I hope not.

This, however, looks petty, and people really are tired of the grandstanding.
