Jeff Sessions Met With A Russian Ambassador And Now All Hell Is Breaking Loose

So, news broke that Jeff Sessions, while still a Senator, met with a Russian ambassador. This was during the campaign, which Sessions was heavily involved with as he was helping push Donald Trump to victory.

I’ve gotten no less than ten Breaking News updates on my phone and even more via email, with almost every outlet treating this as though it is definitive proof that the entire Trump Administration is about to collapse, and every reporter covering the story is treating it as though this will finally be the story that will bring Trump down.

Maybe they really think they’ll be given credit with destroying Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump. Maybe they think they’ve finally uncovered the Great Russian Hacking Mystery. Maybe they’re just bored as hell on a Wednesday night and want to watch social media burn.

None of the people reporting on this story really have any definitive proof of anything, but if you read any of the stories and any of the commentary, you’d think Jeff Sessions brokered the deal Mike Flynn started that ultimately bought Trump the White House. Given the state of the media in the last month, however, I cannot help but be skeptical.

You should be skeptical, too.

First of all, as a Senator, Sessions was on the Armed Services Committee, which is essentially a job that requires you talk with ambassadors all the time. Someone on Twitter pointed to some news story about how Sessions met with something like 25 ambassadors in 2016 or something like that. Sure, with as big a global player as Russia is, I can see that meeting taking place.

I’m sorry. I don’t see the scandal here. Yeah, Sessions wasn’t completely honest during his hearing (or, if you’re like some defenders out there, you believe Sessions answered the question truthfully, but didn’t offer any extra information), but if we fired politicians for failing to disclose all the facts that may or may not be relevant to an issue, then we would be without politicians.

Before you say “That’s not a bad thing, Joe!”, I am aware, but let’s be real here. If this were only about the fact that he didn’t disclose all the information, I’d be down with the cause here. But you know it’s not that, and I know it’s not that.

The Democrats are hanging on to this “RUSSIA HACKED THE CAMPAIGN AND TRUMP IS A RUSSIAN PLANT AND HE IS BAD FOR AMERICA” thing because they cannot accept just how badly they screwed 2016 up. Or how much they’ve been screwing up since they swept in 2008. This Sessions thing isn’t really about national security. It’s about that big Russian scapegoat they’ve been trying to prop up since Hillary lost.
