Climate Dogma Exposed

On May 9, 2017, in Calgary (Alberta, Canada), Friends of Science Society (friendsofscience.org) invites the public to attend Climate Dogma Exposed — an evening of climate policy and science presentations by two special guest speakers.

Climate Dogma Exposed takes place at the Red and White Club, McMahon Stadium, Calgary. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. Event opens with a buffet dinner (included with ticket) and cash bar during the “mix ’n’ mingle” from 6-7 p.m., followed by opening messages and then the speaker presentations.

The Trump administration in the United States has made a U-turn on climate change, but Canada plows ahead, oblivious to the “industrial massacre” that resulted from stringent climate policies in the European Union and United Kingdom. Those outcomes were part of the trigger for Brexit.

In Canada, we are seeing pockets of anger and despair as divergent views on climate policy, and the very real costs and consequences, start to impact the economy. Will Canada survive? And, is it all about climate or is this a convenient storyline for other vested interests such as carbon trading or pitching highly subsidized, costly, inconvenient, unreliable renewables?

Recently, Timothy Lane, deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, told audiences in Montreal that Alberta’s Fort McMurray wildfires of 2016 and the Calgary flood of 2013 were signs of catastrophic climate change and that’s why we should have a carbon price. This type of climate dogma has no basis in fact. The world authority on climate, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) itself sees no correlation between extreme events and human effects on climate, and certainly pricing carbon will not stop floods or wildfires.

For the policy — Robert Lyman, Ottawa energy consultant and former public servant will examine the question: Can Canada survive climate change policy? To put it in simple terms, Lyman “does the math” that few politicians seem willing to do.

The Trudeau government’s goal is to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions from 733 megatons (Mt) in 2014 (the most recent year for which data is available) to 516 Mt in 2030 (i.e. 13 years from now) and 147 Mt in 2050 (i.e. 33 years from now).  Most provincial governments support these goals. If Canada follows through, the economy would be reduced to that of Chad, an impoverished nation with a gross domestic product per capita of  less than two per cent of Canada’s.

What kind of Canada would we have after that? Who knows? Is that really the direction Canadians want to go with their nation?

Lyman retired 10 years ago, as Director General of Environmental Affairs with Transport Canada, after some 27 years as a public servant, with 10 years’ prior experience as a diplomat. He is presently an Ottawa energy policy consultant.

For the science — Steve Goreham, MS in electrical engineering, MBA, author and speaker, will discuss Climate Science and the Myths of Renewable Energy.

Goreham, the author of three books on the subject, will debunk common myths about climate science. Goreham writes: “Today’s society lives in the grip of a madness — the belief that humans are causing dangerous climate change. Melting ice caps, rising oceans, stronger storms, droughts and floods and species extinction are blamed on greenhouse gas emissions from our industry. But contrary to what your political leader, professor and newspaper tell you, global warming is dominated by natural factors. As a result, thousands of climate and energy laws across hundreds of nations, all summed together, are not going to have a measurable effect on Earth’s temperatures.”

Climate Dogma Exposed offers the public a delicious buffet, select video clips, cash bar and insightful presentations on how climate policy and climate dogma affect your everyday life. No special science or policy-making expertise is required.

Friends of Science Society points out that essential public funds for services like wildfire and flood management are being diverted to climate “causes” where they could be better put to use directly addressing the mitigation of future floods or wildfires. The chorus of climate change apocalypse may be great for environmental charities who use these outlandish claims to raise money, but they are a poor way to direct tax dollars to protect taxpayers’ interests.

Friends of Science Society has been providing climate and economic insights to the public and policy-makers since the days of Kyoto back in 2002. The organization is a small non-profit, formed by a core group of earth, atmospheric and solar scientists, professional engineers, along with the open membership of concerned business people and citizens.

Despite the pitch from many climate activists to “save the planet,” even if all countries met their greenhouse gas reduction targets, there would only be a possible reduction of 0.17 degrees Celsius (17 hundredths of a degree) by 2100. This is immeasurable and inconsequential.
