This Dying Army Veteran Thinks He’s All Alone; Let’s Show Him He’s Not
Lee Hernandez is an Army veteran who served his country for almost two decades and did a tour of duty in Iraq. He has been suffering the last five years from a terminal illness, the cause of which is unknown, that causes him to have continuous strokes. His vision and cognitive abilities have been greatly affected, and he is now in hospice care at his home in New Braunfels, Tex.
One recent day, Lee asked his wife, Ernestine, to hold his phone in case someone called. When no one had called after several hours, Lee concluded that no one wanted to talk with him.
“It broke my heart,” said Ernestine. “(Lee’s) speech is not very well, so many people didn’t take much interest or want to talk to him.”
Ernestine decided to do something about it, and asked a group of veteran wives to give out the Hernandezes phone number and ask people to call or text Lee. She wants her husband to know that he is not alone during his final days.
The calls and texts have started to pour in. Since Lee is blind, Ernestine reads the texts to him, which she says “really uplifts him.” Many people have called to pray with the family, and the response from Lee’s fellow veterans has been greatly appreciated.
