Trump Is Right, Removing Confederate Memorials Is Just the First Step

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

This morning, in addition to slagging on Senator Lindsey Graham and basically endorsing Jeff Flake’s primary opponent, President Trump took some time to comment on the rise of iconoclasm in the United States.

While I might disagree with Trump on the aesthetic argument, in principle I think he gets this issue completely correct.

The impulse by the left and its willing followers among Vichy Republicans to destroy an remembrance that there was an American Civil War is rather astonishing. I’m a Southerner and a Virginian. I have Don Troiani’s Bronze Guns and Iron Men in my study. All the adult males in my family tree wore gray, though the bloodline has now been diluted by New Yorkers. None of them owned slaves. They went to war because their state called on them to defend her and to fight beside men of their own name. I had relatives fight at Gettysburg and Chickamauga and Malvern Hill and die in the death camps at Point Lookout, MD, and Camp Chase, OH. A great aunt lost four husbands in five years of war. Those who survived took their paroles, eventually had their civil rights restored, served their communities and lived productive lives, and in time they sent their sons and grandsons and great grandsons off to fight for America in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East. And they did so in very high proportions. They are entitled to a remembrance of their martial spirit and accomplishment be it on the courthouse square or a national battlefield park. That is why the statues in question are of Southern yeoman farmers or generals. They aren’t statues to the great landowners whose offspring were exempt from the draft because they did own slaves. If you don’t like it or want something different remembered, fine. Erect your own statues But you aren’t entitled to destroy history.

Right now we are at a moment where this idiocy can be stopped. Most Americans realize the utter stupidity of what they are seeing.

You can laugh all you want but once you allow this destruction of history to take root there will be no way to stop it.

This insistence that any monument that offends anyone has to be removed is Jacobin in nature and has no logical floor. Since Saturday we’ve heard more calls for the destruction of statues of George Washington and the elimination of the Jefferson Memorial because both of these men owned slaves. The people making these calls are not random twitter users:

What is next? Do we allow people whose ancestors were Tories to demand the removal of all mention of the Revolutionary War because it was the British who freed slaves and the American army that was fighting to preserve slavery in that war and the Patriots were actually traitors to their lawful monarch? Do we demolish the memorial to the dead of the 7th Cavalry on Last Stand Hill because they fought an unjust war against the Plains Indians? Do we bulldoze Jamestown? And what about Columbus?

Why Southern Universities have statues to General Lee:

“Lee arrived in Lexington in mid-September 1865 and went to work immediately. Over the next five years, Washington College grew physically and financially: the A faculty increased in size from four to twenty, enrollment grew from fifty to nearly 400 students, and financial contributions poured in from both southern and northern sources. Lee’s personal involvement with many of his students reflected his desire to create a new generation of Americans. In response to the bitterness of a Confederate widow, Lee wrote, “Dismiss from your mind all sectional feeling, and bring [your children] up to be Americans.”

Lee’s tireless devotion to his duty as president of Washington College eventually took its toll on his health. The outward signs of the heart condition that had plagued him since the Civil War grew more apparent, and in the spring of 1870, on the advice of the faculty, he travelled south on vacation. Less than a month into the next school year, on September 28, 1870, he suffered a massive stroke. Two weeks later, on October 12, Robert E. Lee died in his home on the college campus.” Virginia Historical (http://www.vahistorical.org/collections-and-resources/virginia-history-explorer/robert-e-lee-after-warSociety)

the libs/dems/hums seem to forget that the majority of the southern states seceded over the state’s rights issue, not whether keeping slaves is lawful or not. The state’s rights issue was never really resolved. Whenever the liberals have something they want to do, they don’t have any moral difficulties falling back on the legal theories behind state’s rights .

This means that states like Oregon think they have the right to euthanize their elderly, alzheimers victims, mentally ill, and mongoloid children, if it suits them and seems convenient to the situation. This means that states like Colorado & Washington openly ignore federal laws against growing, distributing, and using marijuana, since after all, they have the state’s right.

yep, BOLDFACE HYPOCRISY. I wonder what would happen if a city council decided to remove a ML King statue somewhere? The libs would have the whole business tied up in federal district court before the press reported the city council vote on that evening’s news.

jknbt…and isn’t it funny how all the slaves owners were democrats. It always struck me funny why people of color who have relatives that were slaves would choose the very party that supported slavery and enslaved them in the first place and support them.

…the democrats first enslaved black american’s on the farms and now they’ve modernized their approach by doing it through welfare, HUD housing that stacks and rack’s em in drug infested neighborhoods and socialized programs . They won’t quit until the black population takes them down by walking off that democrat plantation once and for all.

BLM…you really want to do some good for your culture, then don’t be an ISIS arm of the democrat agenda, lest they leave you without them to wave for help when you wake up from their nightmare.

Yes, next will be the Washington Monument, then the Lincoln Memorial, then…..
      THE US CONSTITUTION!!!

Solution is put up more of them. Create an entire duplicate “Western Whitehouse”,
in say beautiful UTAH or New Mexico. Then put up also easiest to do
Washington Monuments in each and EVERY state capitol of EVERY State.
That should be a great start. Create a few jobs along the way also!!!

I’m waiting for them to insist the Supreme Court and Congressional buildings be torn down next. According to these fanatics everything in this country is tainted with slavery. Guess we should just cut to the chase and ask China to take us over, put anyone not Chinese in a concentration camp and be done with it.
