Putin arrives in Iran for talks as tensions mount

Putin Meets Top Officials in Tehran

Russian President Vladimir Putin held separate meetings with Iranian leaders in Tehran on Wednesday to discuss bilateral ties and the latest regional developments.

The Russian president who is in Iran to participate in the trilateral meeting of Tehran-Moscow-Baku, held a meeting with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Wednesday afternoon.

He also met with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in the capital city of Tehran on Wednesday to discuss economic cooperation, the nuclear deal and regional issues, specially the latest conditions in Syria.

Putin arrived in Tehran earlier today, heading a high-ranking delegation, to hold talks with the Iranian officials on ways to further develop ties and cooperation.

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev also arrived in Tehran on Wednesday to participate in the bilateral meeting with his Iranian and Russian counterparts.

In a meeting with President Rouhani earlier today, both officials underlined the necessity for using local currencies in their bilateral trade ties as well as trilateral exchanges with neighbors.

“The two countries can make their trade exchanges through the Central Banks and national currencies and even this can expand in the form of trilateral ties with other neighbors,” President Rouhani said.

He also announced that Tehran is ready to develop its cooperation with Azerbaijan in the industrial, agricultural, transportation, economic and energy swap in oil and gas fields as well as discovery and extraction of oil in the Caspian Sea.

Elsewhere, President Rouhani underscored the importance of stability and security in the region, and said, “Today, we should try more than before to develop the regional countries’ cooperation in the fight against terrorism.”

Aliyev, for his part, described trade relations and exchanges between the two countries in recent years as very good and considerable, and said, “The Republic of Azerbaijan welcomes using national currencies in trade ties with Iran and this method can also be used trilaterally in relations with other neighbors as well.”

Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshrou took Saudi Arabia responsible for the pains and dire conditions of the war-hit people in Yemen. “Based on a report by the UN secretary-general, killing and harassment of children in Yemen continues and over 500 children have lost their lives and the Saudi-led coalition should be blamed for half of this (massacre) and the other sides, including the ISIL and al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, are responsible for the other half,” Khoshrou said, addressing a UN Security Council meeting on children and armed clashes in New York on Tuesday.

Warning of the dire situation of Yemen on the verge of the third consecutive Saudi-led war, he said, “Draught and lack of access to the medical services is threatening millions of people.”

“The Saudi-led coalition which is merely after military victory over Yemen instead of political reconciliation is responsible for this tragedy,” Khoshrou said.

Yemen: Over 180 Militants of Saudi-Led Coalition Killed, Wounded in Sana’a Province

More than 180 militants affiliated to the Saudi-led coalitions were killed or wounded in different battlefields in Nahm region in Eastern Sana’a, local sources reported on Wednesday. The sources reported that the Yemeni Army soldiers and popular committees affiliated to Yemen’s Ansarullah engaged in fierce clashes with the mercenaries of the Saudi-led coalition and repelled their attack to prevail over army positions in al-Manara, al-Qarn, al-Saheh and Yam in Nahm region in Eastern Sana’a, killing and wounding over 180 mercenaries, including several commanders. Also, a Yemeni source said that the Yemeni forces destroyed invading troops’ BMP vehicles and other military equipment.

Reports said earlier today that the Saudi Air force carried out several air raids in Sa’ada and Sana’a in Northwestern and Western Yemen on Tuesday and Wednesday, killing 34 civilians and wounding several more. The warplanes bombed Alaf bazaar in Sahar region in Sa’ada province in Northwestern Yemen this morning, killing 26 civilians and wounding 9 more. Hospital sources reported that some of the injured are in critical conditions, guessing rise in the civilian death toll.

In the meantime, the fighter jets targeted Belad al-Rous region South of Sana’a in Western Yemen on Tuesday, killing 8 civilians and wounding 25 others. Based on reports, different regions in the provinces of Haja, Sana’a and Sa’ada have been bombed tens of times by the Saudi army aircraft.
