Schadenfranken: Democratic Senator Gets a Karmic Lesson About Jokes

Sometimes karma delivers the most beautifully vicious lessons, as Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) learned today.

TV host and sports broadcaster Leeann Tweeden revealed that when she and Franken were on a USO Tour in 2006 to entertain our military serving overseas, Franken forcibly kissed her without her consent while they rehearsed a skit, and also groped her breasts while she was sleeping.

And there is a photo proving that second accusation.

Franken issued a statement apologizing to Tweeden, and said he did not remember the skit rehearsal the same way but did not dispute Tweeden’s account.

He also claimed that the photo was “clearly intended to be funny.” The real joke is how different a tune Franken was singing less than 24 hours before this story broke.

At a hearing yesterday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Franken had harsh words for Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett, who has been nominated for a position on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Willett, well-known for his humorous Twitter account (@JusticeWillett), frequently posts light-hearted jokes and silly puns commenting on the news of the day, but avoids directly getting in the fray himself because of his position on the bench.

Several of Willett’s tweets drew Franken’s ire, like this one joking about marrying bacon:

Franken, along with fellow Democrat scold Sen. Patrick Leahy, put on a good show feigning outrage. No rational person really believes Willett wants to issue a ruling allowing people to marry delicious pork products, and it’s a ridiculous stretch of his tweets to claim they’re offensive.

Franken yesterday: 

“I don’t get it. But sometimes when you don’t get a joke, it’s because it wasn’t a joke.”

Franken today: 

“As to the photo, it was clearly intended to be funny but wasn’t. I shouldn’t have done it.”

Sounds like the Senator needs a remedial comedy lesson.

Tweeting about marrying bacon = joke.

Forcibly sticking your tongue in a woman’s mouth = not a joke.

Groping a woman’s breasts while she sleeps, and taking a photo of it for your own amusement = not a joke.
