What’s Gravy for the Goose: Should Trump’s Accusers Be Given a Second Look?

‘Tis the season.

No, really. All the dirty laundry is making the front page and the bad behavior of powerful men is being laid bare, excoriated (rightfully), and the demands that something substantive be done are overwhelming.

With this new climate, buoyed by the #MeToo movement, how long did you think it was going to be before President Trump’s past was brought back up?

It certainly seems the time for it, since Conyers, Franken, and a host of others are getting named and driven out.

A new Quinnipiac poll is telling the tale of just how seriously people are taking the issue.

A whopping 70 percent of respondents to the poll feel Congress should investigate the allegations made against Trump last year, that included over a dozen women.

Of course, broken down across party lines, it looks different.

Republicans and Democrats differ on the issue. Just 39 percent of Republicans say they think Congress should look into the allegations against Trump, compared to 86 percent of Democrats who feel the same way. Another 67 percent of registered Independents polled agreed Congress should look into the allegations.

Yeah, that’s to be expected. Tribalism being as it is.

Maybe cross-reference and ask those Democrats what they think of Al Franken and then ask them about Roy Moore.

Ask the Republicans the same thing.

Further into the poll, 73 percent think Trump is being a hypocrite when he mentions other men who’ve been accused of sexual misconduct.

When speaking of a generic political figure accused of inappropriate sexual behavior, 66 percent say that person should resign.

Forty-seven percent of women nationwide say they have been sexually assaulted, according to the poll, compared with 17 percent of men who say they have been sexually assaulted.

It’s a problem, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.

After Trump’s 2005 “Access Hollywood” audio was revealed, where he boasted of sexually assaulting women, feeling as if he was entitled, because of his wealth and fame, it, like it has been with every powerful man from Harvey Weinstein to Al Franken, opened up the floodgate of accusers.

Who knew that only a year later, the world would have had enough?

Trump and the White House’s official position is that while Franken’s and Conyers’ accusers should be listened to, Trump’s accusers are all liars.

And if you’re salivating over another Al Franken accuser, but you’re indignant when Trump’s accusers are mentioned, you are a hypocrite.

The poll was conducted with 1,747 adult respondents, from November 29 to December 4. It has a 2.8 percentage point margin of error.
