Democratic Congressman Apologizes To John Kelly For Questioning Military Service

Reporting on politics these days is often a constant parade of horribles where those on one side accuse or gripe about the other side, sometimes even from the same political party. So, while more often than not the daily strife of political commentary is filled with negative, it’s worth mentioning the positive when it happens.

In a meeting between White House officials and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus over issues including DACA and border security, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D – Ill.) made a point to personally apologize to White House Chief-of-Staff John Kelly for making disparaging comments about his military service in public recently.

Gutierrez was asked about the apology during an appearance on CNN Wednesday. What he said was a refreshing reminder that despite political differences, we must remember one another’s humanity and if we regret saying or doing something, we should apologize to those we’ve wronged.

“Sometimes, you have to take a moment to breathe,” Gutierrez said of why he felt the apology was necessary. “And if you say something that you think was wrong, that you think was hurtful, that you think was inappropriate, it’s not about manning up. It’s about showing your humanity and saying, “Let’s do the right thing.” That’s the way my mom and dad taught me to do it.”

Agree 100 percent. If more people in and outside of politics took the same approach we’d undeniably be a lot better off.
