Doctors Who Don’t Want to Perform Abortions or Transgender Treatments to Get Protections Thanks to Trump

Many doctors take their “do no harm” oath pretty seriously, and that includes doctors and medical workers who don’t wish to perform abortions, transgender surgeries, and more in order to simply please a patient. Taking a stand against, or flat-out refusing to perform these procedures carried major legal risks, but thanks to President Trump, those risks may be a thing of the past.

Many doctors view abortion as the ultimate anti-thesis to their Hippocratic oath, seeing as how it literally ends with the termination of a life. Many doctors also view sex reassignment surgeries requested by transgender patients with the same amount of contempt as it the surgery already increases the likelihood of suicide in a group that already has a 40 percent suicide rate.

According to Politico, Trump is on the verge of passing new rules that allow those with moral obligations against such procedures protections under the law that would prevent lawsuits from touching them:

Under a proposed rule — which has been closely guarded at HHS and is now under review by the White House — the HHS office in charge of civil rights would be empowered to further shield these workers and punish organizations that don’t allow them to express their moral objections, according to sources on and off the Hill.

The new rule would essentially create a whole new division of the HHS with the purpose of protecting instances when doctor’s morals cause them to back away from certain treatments or procedures:

The pending rule, which could be released as soon as this week, has been described to POLITICO as establishing a new “division” of the HHS civil rights office that would conduct compliance reviews, audits and other enforcement actions to ensure that health care providers are allowing workers to opt out of procedures when they have religious or moral objections.

Naturally, this has angered activists from LGBT and legal organizations:

That’s alarmed advocates for LGBT patients, who say they’re already fighting to overcome stigmas and discrimination and who warn that the policy shift will only worsen their situation.”This is the use of religion to hurt people because you disapprove of who they are,” said Harper Jean Tobin of the National Center for Transgender Equality. “Any rule that grants a license to discriminate would be a disgrace and a mockery of the principal of religious freedom we all cherish.”

And…

Patient groups and legal organizations vowed to challenge HHS if the agency strengthens conscience protections. “Should the administration choose to move forward to implement a discriminatory policy, we will see them in court,” Louise Melling of the American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement.

Interestingly, these LGBT groups and the ACLU are still ignoring the civil rights of those who step outside the boundaries the left set for society. Like the Christian bakers currently under fire for not baking the damn cake, the doctors who are typically targeted are of the Christian variety. Certain religions, however, seem to get a pass for opting out of anything.

Forcing someone morally against the termination of a baby to perform the procedure is cruel on many levels. For pro-life individuals, it’s forcing someone whose primary interest is to cure people and improve their life to kill someone. The act can be heartwrenching. Threatening someone with legal action, or career termination because they won’t is an awful thing to do.
