Dossier Story Gets Weirder: Sydney Blumenthal May Have Been Interviewed by FBI in Connection to the Dossier in Early 2016

It’s being reported a bombshell new report was made available to House members Thursday detailing abuses of the FISA court that could lead to the ouster of senior officials in both the FBI and the Department of Justice; and if that happens, it all goes back to that pesky little document first released by Buzzfeed lo these many months ago: the Steele dossier.

This is the document that Democrats hung their hopes on in their quest to prove collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian agents, and the one that it is alleged was use to procure FISA warrants to spy to Trump adviser Carter Page.

We already know the Clinton campaign had a hand in paying for the dossier through their lawyers via payments to the opposition research firm that employed Christoper Steele — the former British spy who authored the dossier. And now it just gets weirder with news that Clinton confidante may have been interviewed by the FBI regarding the dossier way back in February 2016.

The question, of course, is why; especially since the dossier was then used “in part” to obtain warrants to spy on a Trump campaign adviser.

What Blumenthal reportedly said just following the election further tightens the screws on the Clinton camp’s role in what more and more appears to be a planned attempt to take down Donald Trump and offers justification for what national security reporter Sara Carter calls the “explosive” report given to the House Thursday that could lead “to the end of Robert Mueller’s Special Counsel investigation into President Trump and his associates.”

Carter writes that Blumenthal was planting the seeds of collusion in the immediate aftermath of the the election (the results of which likely were as much a surprise to him as they were to everyone else).

After the 2016 presidential election, Blumenthal told Dutch TV Nieuwsuur that Clinton’s loss to Trump “was the result of a cabal of right-wing agents of the FBI in the New York office attached to Rudy Giuliani, who was a member of Trump’s campaign.”

“I think it’s not unfair to call it a coup,” said Blumenthal.

“A coup, even?” the reporter said.

Blumenthal added, “yeah, a coup d’etat.”

Interesting that Blumenthal chose to point the finger at the FBI when he had perhaps just spent time chatting with that very same agency about a dossier that was soon after used — very likely improperly, as FISA warrants usually require more than just opposition research as supporting evidence — to try to discredit the Trump campaign by suggesting they were working with the Russians to keep Hillary Clinton from ever seeing the inside of the White House.

Talk about a tangled web.

Add to all of this, the transcripts from the testimony of Fusion GPS regarding the Russian collusion matter  were made available by the House Intelligence Committee this week and one interesting bit of timeline pops out: the FBI never reached out to Fusion GPS about the contents of the Steele dossier, never tried to confirm their veracity.

So, just to get this straight: the FBI wasn’t interested in talking to the firm that employed the author of the dossier they then used to get a warrant to spy on a Trump adviser. But they did reach out (allegedly) to Sydney Blumenthal, friend and adviser of Hillary Clinton.

Starting to see how heads at the FBI might be getting to roll.
