John Lewis: “I Think He Is a Racist”

It has been a year since OD’s MLK Jr. Day Special on Selma.

In 2017, I went to Selma on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to show how much the city has declined since John Lewis was whacked over the head on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Donald Trump’s tweets about John Lewis’s blighted, crime-infested Atlanta district were so refreshing that I was able to temporarily overcome my skepticism to attend the Trump inauguration in Washington:

A year ago, John Lewis was saying “I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president.” In the year that has passed, Trump has issued an executive order to promote HBCUs, celebrated Black History Month, signed the Charlottesville resolution, boasted about achieving the lowest black unemployment rate, signed the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day proclamation, celebrated the life of Rosa Parks, Kwanzaa and attended the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. He has checked all the usual boxes on catering to black identity politics.

Where is John Lewis now on President Donald Trump?

“‘I think he is a racist,’ Lewis, a Georgia Democrat and icon of the civil rights movement, said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Lewis was asked by moderator George Stephanopoulos how he reconciled remarks Trump made Friday commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with his “shithole” comment, reported to have been made during an immigration meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers Thursday.

“I don’t think there’s any way that you can square what the president said with the words of Martin Luther King Jr. and what he said about Dr. King,” Lewis said. “It’s just impossible. There’s not any way you can do that. It’s unreal. It’s unbelievable. It makes me sad. It [makes] me cry.”

Still crying.

As I said a year ago, “for civil rights dinosaur John Lewis, it is always Selma in 1965.” It is amazing how little has changed since then. Mike Pence is still cucking. Selma is still declining. John Lewis is still calling Donald Trump a racist after he created Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park.
