Dueling Attorneys: Trump Legal Team Split on Potential Trump-Mueller Interview

Yeah. It’s like they know who their client is.

Smart lawyers.

Donald Trump’s lawyers are advising him very strongly against getting face-to-face with special counsel Robert Mueller.

Why so vehement if he’s done nothing wrong, guys?

Well, because he’s prone to lying.

Trump’s attorneys have advised him against the interview over concerns that he could be charged with lying to investigators in the probe into Russian election meddling, according to The Times.

It’s a wise move, given Trump’s inflated ego and the need to jabber incessantly about himself (sometimes in third person).

Trump has been privately telling others that he wants to do the interview, believing it would clear his name in the probe into Russian election interference.

If Trump declined to sit for an interview, Mueller could try to subpoena him for one — a move that could create a complicated legal battle.

And while Trump’s personal lawyer, John Dowd is trying to run block against a Trump-Mueller meet-up, White House lawyer Ty Cobb actually believes some gains could be made by allowing it to happen.

Cobb has pushed for the White House to be fully cooperative with the special counsel, and has said in the past that he expected the investigation to be completed by the end of 2017.

Yeah, that’s strike one, Cobb.

They’ve definitely got a lot to talk about. In particular, the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

While Trump had every right, as president, to fire Comey, he let it slip to NBC’s Lester Holt that he fired Comey because of “the Russia thing.”

Troublesome. It kind of sounds like… obstruction.

We’ll see who wins out – Dowd or Cobb – but so far, there’s been no request from Mueller’s team to talk with the president.
