Debbie Wasserman Schultz and “Stolen Valor” Blumenthal Rip Off Chris Rock’s Gun Violence Idea

Sometimes politics become such a self-parody that you can’t even believe what you are seeing.

But this is Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Richard “Stolen Valor” Blumenthal. Together. So parody is sort of baked into the entire affair.

“And yet, unlike firearms purchases, someone who wants to go into a store that sells ammunition can buy as much ammunition as they want without so much as being asked their first name or any other question and walk out,” Wasserman Schultz said.

Wasserman Schultz said her bill would close that loophole.

“The Ammunition Background Check Act of 2018 that I filed on Thursday, and that is being filed in the United States Senate by Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, will close that gaping loophole to require all buyers of ammunition to undergo an instant background check,” Wasserman Schultz said.

She said the law would use the FBI’s instant background check system, which is the same one used for firearms purchases.

There are lots of very obvious problems with this proposal. How would this regulate private citizens who load their own ammunition? How would it affect the purchase, new or used, of reloading equipment and supplies? And, of course, the gaping hole in the proposal is that they are requiring the use of the FBI’s background check system…that would be the system that has allowed just about every mass shooter in U.S. history to legally obtain a firearm.

The most obvious thing about the proposal is that it essentially rips off a comedy routine by Chris Rock…a routine that makes a lot more sense than what Wasserman Schultz and Blumenthal are proposing.
