Trey Gowdy’s Advice for Trump and His Attorney Is on Point

I’ve been saying the same thing, myself.

We talked on Saturday about President Trump’s lawyer, John Dowd, suggesting the time was right to get rid of Robert Mueller and to shut down special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

In a response to an inquiry about the firing of Andrew McCabe by the Daily Beast, Dowd wrote this:

“I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the brilliant and courageous example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia Collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe’s boss James Comey based upon a fraudulent and corrupt Dossier,” Dowd then wrote.

He told The Daily Beast he was speaking on behalf of the president, in his capacity as the president’s attorney.

“What’s that smell in this room[Bureau}? Didn’t you notice it, Brick [Jim]? Didn’t you notice a powerful and obnoxious odor of mendacity in this room[Bureau}?… There ain’t nothin’ more powerful than the odor of mendacity[corruption]… You can smell it. The man is a nut.

On a side note, later reports are that his email font was purple Comic Sans, which just goes to show, nobody is all bad.

(Seriously, guys, if I could control how my work looks on the front page of RedState, it would all be in purple Comic Sans.)

The suggestion by Dowd caused a bit of a stir, with most rational voices calling it for what it is – a really bad idea.

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy supported those voices.

“I think the president’s attorney, frankly, does him a disservice when he says that and when he frames the investigation that way,” Gowdy said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“If you look at the jurisdiction for Robert Mueller, first and foremost what did Russia do to this country in 2016. That is supremely important and it has nothing to do with collusion,” Gowdy said. “So to suggest that Mueller should shut down and that all he’s looking at is collusion, if you have an innocent client Mr. Dowd, act like it.”

Indeed.

Trump already acts like the guiltiest man alive, with his unhinged ranting and Twitter rages. To have his attorney – someone I’m assuming went to an actual law school, passed the bar, and has some measure of experience under his belt – express the kinds of things he expressed on Saturday is reckless.

Innocent people don’t sweat.

Gowdy went on to point out the decision to end the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation, and how the announced findings were that there was no collusion. He suggested that decision should be of some comfort to Trump, and that he should allow Mueller all the time he needed to finish his work.

What he should not do, however, is fire him, as it would open up a whole new set of troubles.

“If the allegation is collusion with the Russians, and there is no evidence of that, and you’re innocent of that, act like it,” Gowdy said.

It’s good advice, but not the kind Trump is likely to take, especially when he’s surrounded himself with characters like Dowd, who show a similar penchant for idiocy.
