According to Comey Memos, Trump Mused to Him About Jailing Reporters to Get Information

Well, no, this isn’t a thing that should be happening in a free republic.

In the fantasy fascist government of the Trump’s Temple congregation, maybe, but not here.

One of the reveals from ousted FBI Director James Comey’s memos was the musing of President Trump that locking up reporters for doing their job should be a thing.

In a memo dated Feb. 19, 2017, Comey recounted that Trump shared concerns about leaks from within his administration. The president suggested jailing reporters “to find out what they know.”

Really? I mean, we already know Trump has no qualms about calling for an end to due process, but how far does he think he can go? Is intimidating the press where we want to be, as a nation?

Comey’s response, according to the memos, was not to immediately call the orange-hued joke out for his ludicrous suggestion. Rather, he laughed it off.

He told Trump he was “eager to find leakers and would like to nail one to the door as a message,” but explained that prosecuting reporters was “tricky.”

“I said something about the value of putting a head on a pike as a message,” Comey wrote.

“(Trump) replied by saying it may involve putting reporters in jail. ‘They spend a couple days in jail, make a new friend, and they are ready to talk.’ I laughed as I walked to the door Reince Priebus had opened,” Comey wrote.

Jokes about prison rape? Yeah. Ok.

None of this rings untrue, as Trump has repeatedly lashed out at the media during his presidency.

He’s also had repeated problems with leaks, and as some have suggested in the past, it may have been from staff members, hoping to embarrass him into doing the right thing, rather than acting on his own.
