High School Teacher in Georgia Instructs Students: the Confederate Flag Is a Marry-Your-Sister ‘Save the Date’ Card

Did you happen to grow up with the Confederate flag? Was it on the backs of trucks? On bedroom walls? On the General Lee?

What did it stand for to you?

Whatever it was, a teacher in Georgia wants your child or grandchild to know the symbol well — and its meaning.

As reported by Augusta’s WRDW-TV, kids at Hephzibah High School were treated to a photo of the flag accompanied by the following description on the board:

“[It’s] a sticker you put on the back of your pickup truck to announce that you intend to marry your sister. Think of it like a white trash ‘Save the Date’ card.”

One parent posted a picture of the display to social media.

Melissa Fuller stuck it on Facebook and told WRDW, “A lot of it is that it’s not morally correct. It’s unethical. It’s just something you don’t want to discuss today in today’s world and especially inside of a classroom. Why was that (text) used? With it being such a rough area, why would you put that our there to a class discussion that could have turned very ugly?”

The teacher’s been placed on (paid) administrative leave, and the school’s issued a statement:

“The Richmond County School System is committed to creating a diverse, equitable learning environment for students. The language used in the example was unacceptable and has no place in our classrooms.”

Melissa’s daughter previously wore a belt sporting a Confederate flag buckle to school. She was told to remove it, which she did.

But she still go an in-school suspension.

The Facebook post has received over 150 comments, many siding with Melissa.
