Trump Denies Rumors of “Mini Strokes” That He Himself Started
President Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday to lash out against a new book that suggests his health is in decline.
The book in question, titled Donald Trump v. The United States, points to an instance last November when the President made a trip to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington. Author Michael Schmidt writes in the book that Vice President Mike Pence was put on “standby” in case Trump had to go under anesthesia during a previously-unscheduled trip to the hospital. Pence says he does not recall the incident.
But on Tuesday, Trump attempted to set the record straight about that visit, writing on Twitter:
It never ends! Now they are trying to say that your favorite President, me, went to Walter Reed Medical Center, having suffered a series of mini-strokes. Never happened to THIS candidate – FAKE NEWS. Perhaps they are referring to another candidate from another Party!
The tweet has only amplified the story. The kicker? Schmidt’s book never once mentions “mini strokes.” Now, Trump’s bizarre attempt to deny rumors of poor health have made those same rumors more specific.
White House Response
At Trump’s behest, White House physician Sean Conley released the following statement on the President’s wellbeing:
President Donald J Trump has asked that I, Dr. Sean Conley, Physician to the President, address the recent public comments regarding his health. I can confirm that President Trump has not experienced nor been evaluated for a cerebrovascular accident (stroke), transient ischemic attack (mini stroke), or any acute cardiovascular emergencies, as have been incorrectly reported in the media.
The President remains healthy and I have no concerns about his ability to maintain the rigorous schedule ahead of him. As stated in my last report, I expect him to remain fit to execute the duties of the Presidency.
As for Trump’s mention of “a series of mini strokes,” a White House aide says that Trump was actually referring to a tweet by former Bill Clinton staffer Joe Lockhart. Lockhart had asked on Twitter whether Trump had “a stroke which he is hiding from the American public.” But his tweet never used the term “mini stroke.”
Last November, Trump made an unannounced visit to Walter Reed, and remained out of the public eye for two days. But the White House maintains what it said at the time, which was that the President was simply undergoing his annual physical, which was penciled into his schedule at the last minute.
