Coups or the military taking control in democratic African countries were formerly a major cause of instability on the Black Continent; however, they faded for a period before making a reappearance in the 2020s and toppling democratic governments in French-speaking countries. After world leaders decried the trend of coups, everyone expected it would stop, but a failed coup recently took place in Sierra Leone, one of the richest diamond-producing countries in Africa, despite being the poorest.
Many Africans have lost faith in democracy, which is one reason coups have become more frequent. Democracy, which is defined as “a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections,” although the definition sounds lovely, democracy has historically been the most corrupt form of government in the continent, responsible for poverty among Africans.
