A Darwin man sentenced yesterday over the fatal hit-and-run of an eight-year-old boy pleads guilty to separate drug and dangerous driving charges and is fined $2090.
The prosecutor Erin McAuley told the court Alexander had spent the night before the incident taking drugs with friends.
The night he was arrested he was “sitting in a dirt patch smoking bongs”, she told the court.
Alexander pleaded guilty to the possession and use of cannabis and methamphetamine.
In his sentencing remarks, Magistrate John Neill stressed the drugs charges were not responsible for the death of Jack Sultan-Page, although they related to the same day as the hit-and-run death.
He fined Alexander $2,090 for the five charges but noted the amount was lower than it might have been because Alexander had shown himself to be committed to drug rehabilitation.
Mr Neill said a report from the drug rehabilitation centre Banyan House was “glowing” about Alexander’s attitude and efforts and said such a positive report was “quite unusual”.
Mr Maley said his client would plead guilty to the matter before Justice Stephen Southwood, and predicted he would “receive a partly suspended sentence”.

A 24-hour police manhunt led to Alexander’s arrest on November 2, 2014.
Jack Sultan-Page, 9, was riding his bicycle in Moulden when he was reportedly hit by a white Toyota HiLux allegedly being driven by Alexander, who fled the scene.
Alexander was one of three men who appeared in the Darwin Magistrates Court this week for hit-and-run offences.
Clifford Issell was charged with hit-and-run causing death over an alleged incident on the Stuart Highway on May 6 this year.
Ryan Richards appeared on the same charge from an alleged incident on May 25.
Both will face court in August.
