Communications After A CME/EMP Event

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Do you know what a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is? Most of you probably do and I don’t want to bore you to death explaining it so let’s just say that the sun tosses plasma our way at times. Once in a great while, it throws a really big one directly at Earth and the next time this happens, you can kiss your high dollar, modern electronic equipment goodbye!

The last time a major event happened was in the 1800′s (look up the Carrington Event to read about it). The energy was absorbed by telegraph lines across the entire northern hemisphere, starting fires and even seriously shocking a few telegraph operators. Fortunately, the telegraph was the highest tech communications on the planet at the time so the damage was not that great.

We had a minor event in the 80′s that took the northeast power grid down for a bit but a CME at the level of the 1859 Carrington Event today would burn out every microprocessor, every solid state device and most satellites! This –will– happen again, it’s not a matter of if but when. It is estimated that it could take up to a decade to produce the transformers required just to bring the electrical grid back online and I think that’s probably overstated but it would certainly take a number of years. Because of the labor involved (these large transformers are hand made to order) not to mention the price and availability of copper, we simply don’t have extras sitting around.

As if we didn’t have enough to worry about eh?

In addition to a CME, we have EMP weapons too. These are not real high tech to build and can do as much or more damage than a CME can, expect them to be first strike weapons in any major war and it won’t be long before terrorist nations have them if they don’t already. It is believed that North Korea has already designed and tested them so if that is true, we can expect that technology to already be in the hands of the Iranians as well.

We take it for granted that our instant, worldwide communications will be there when we wake up every morning but what if that wasn’t so? Without communications of any kind, no Internet, no TV, no radio, what would we do? Well, it would certainly not kill us but it would be a big problem well beyond a minor inconvenience. Those with the ability to at least get news of the region and the world or even better, set up their own communication systems, would definitely have an upper hand even if it was just the peace of mind in having a little knowledge of what is going on.

In this article I will discuss a few topics including…

1. What you can do to protect your electronic equipment.

2. What type of equipment can survive a CME/EMP.

3. The different types of communications available to civilians and how it relates to not only a CME/EMP but to any SHTF event.

you might expect a radioactive waste dirty bomb or series of them in conjunction with the solar emp or human one

    • CosmicKiwiPerth

Yep, pretty much right. The Iranians have tested rockets & said afterwards they did not reach orbit. Thing is they weren`t meant to reach orbit. They were testing EMP rockets & would use a small nuke to create the EMP. In conjunction with the North Koreans they`d probably use a submarine to get it close enough to the United States. It would be mayhem over there as the electricity grid does down for months if not a year or so as the story contributor says. In the meantime anarchy, civil unrest would ensure the grid may not come back on in years. Civil war erupts. People go back to living like the Amish do now. Better to be prepared I recon. Don`t turn into a militia, just have enough to defend yourselves. Have some chooks, beef animals if you have a farm. Grow some food. Store some too. Have solar battery chargers, small 80 to 120 watt solar panels to charge up deep cycle batteries. They will charge up rechargeables so your torches will run, possibly run small fridges. Solar hot water is the way & many here in West Oz have them due to amount of sunny days we have. Quite a few here have solar power panels too but they won`t work unless the grid is up. If I went that way I`d have them connected to deep cycle batteries & go it alone.

Okay, here is one for you, what happens to the nuclear power stations. Their circuitry would fry, there would be no water cooling. What good is survival gear if it will be a radio active mess.

This is a situation not to be envied or put upon anyone, but this is where us old techies that understand how to use this type of equipment and power it, without books, come into our own. “make some more coffee for me and the plumber/carpenter/doctor here MR banker/accountant, and ask the young lady to come in with some more food” ( sly grin)
      Hopefully it will never happen….

Yes AllenH. Correct me if I am wrong; US Nuclear Power stations have to have a week back up Diesel for its generators. Well we hope they don`t run out of diesel then..

      • Anonamoos in the hoose

I think the diesel engines would be included in the frying. They also have parts that can be damaged. If I am not wrong on this one.

        • Indiana_Prepper

Older diesel engines that have not been converted to electronic ignition will be fine. The ones designed specifically for backup generators in critical applications like nuke plants, should also be ok. I say “should” because I have no idea if that is true or not. I would hope they had the foresight to take this precaution but who knows short of the engineering teams at the plant sites.

        • Indiana_Prepper

As an afterthought relating to the common sense of using diesel engines that are not susceptible to CME/EMPs, I have to consider the following…

What brilliant engineers would build a nuclear reactor on fault lines (like many of ours are) or even worse, right next to the coast in earthquake prone regions (like California and Japan)?

Additionally, what brilliant designers thought it would be a good idea to store spent radioactive fuel in the same location as the reactor and then on top of that, overload it six to ten times its designed capacity?

No, on second thought I don’t think we should assume they were smart enough or had the foresight to put in generators that would survive a CME/EMP.

        • Anonamoos in the hoose

The nuclear reactors are just a ticking time bomb, even under normal conditions I think it will not be long till the US has an incident. I have read of leaks and plants that are not properly being maintained, but this is well guarded information. They will never publicly say this on a national station. It would cause an outrage.
I do not think the US will have a chance if these stations get taken out by one of these events.
Those diesels might not even fire up. The wiring alone will burn out, the bushes might as well. Also if there is any electricity flowing through them at the same time, it would just burn up. So a meltdown of at least one station would be a guaranteed minimum. And that would be enough.
