SPAM as survival food

We all know what SPAM is, but did you know that you can use SPAM as survival food?

SPAM as survival food

If there ever comes a time where food is scarce, a wise individual would have been prepared with many a case o’ Spam. I’m sure you are wondering why I am such a fan of Spam. Let me give you some data on what I’ve discovered.

I was raised in a pretty anti-spam household. Only as a strapping young adult, did I get to sample this delicious entree. Yes, I like Spam.

I’ll go one better, I love Spam. I had no idea it was so freaking delicious, ohhhhh my parents messed with my mind, pretending it was some nasty thing, to be avoided at all cost. This should have been my first clue that my parents were up to no good, but that’s a story for another time.

Many of us, who were raised in the rural countryside, know that we can hunt for food (aka meat) in the wild, but some of us do not realize that a diet of lean meat, without any kind of fat taken in along the way, will give you protein poisoning and you’ll probably die.

Spam isn’t lean, not in the least.

One 12oz can of spam contains 6 2-ounce servings. One 2-ounce serving will give you 15g of fat. Fat, that your body will need in lean times. Toss in the 767 mg of sodium, that you won’t get from deer or rabbit and you’ve just supplied your body with 2 vital “nutrients”, that can make a huge difference, in your post SHTF life.

Another great thing about Spam, is that it’s canned meat. It requires no refrigeration and, according to the Hormel website, the shelf life of Spam is “indefinite”. Hormel also states that spam will be safe to eat much much longer than the “Enjoy By” date, although the flavor may decrease over time.

Spam bonus: no one really wants to carry around a bunch of cans of SPAM in their Bug Out Bag, SPAM now comes in a 24 pack of single serve pouches . Those pouches will fit much better in our bags! I just ordered 2 24 packs!

Stock up on Spam as a survival food. It stores “forever”, its delicious and will provide the fat and sodium you and your family will need.

And to prove we aren’t snobs, here’s some Treet!

Can’t help thinking about the Monty Python skit.
(singing) Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam … spam, spam, spam, spam … lovely spam, wonderful spam …

In a more serious note: I have a few cases of Spam in my emergency supplies.

Another cool thing about SPAM is that it helps you get up easier in the morning. Not only do you have something to look forward to for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but the impending explosive diarreah is a great motivator to be up and at ‘em bright and early!

Nothing like a good jog to the latrine before breakfast.

        I kid….

        mostly.

As kids in the uk we grew up on this poor mans food because it used to be so cheap, put it always felt like a treat,
started buying it for myself again a few years ago and to my horror discovered my grown up kids keep pinching it
even when the fridge is full of quality meats.

      This is a spam right?
I just read the label, not one vitamin and the only mineral is 32% salt and 23%fat, no wonder it lasts a long time. Have a look at the health rating…not even half a star from 5
Oh but hang on, it’s cheap, right.
Rather have a can of beans.

      • PaulTarsuss

LOL….and it’s not even cheap! I’tll cost you over 2 bucks for a 12 oz. can and is about as good a “survival” food source as a box of twinkies. And who doesn’t know by now, the long sordid history of oversalted meats?

I’m with the RainMan on this one….stick with nature. Dried beans are MUCH cheaper, long lasting, and MUCH healthier.

Besides, many americans seem oblivious to how pigs are raised and what they eat. Virtually the whole of corporate meat producers these days is riddled with corruption and toxic substances.

Many among cwhoreporate america think nothing of poisoning you and your families in order to produce fatter pigs….at both ends of the spectrum.

        • RainMan

“Fattening pigs at both ends of the spectrum”
          Well said

Yes indeed, a can of beans would be a much better choice. In a survival situation, one needs to maintain a strong immune system. Spam (called ‘corned meat’ in my country) is a highly processed junk food. Besides beef, it contains ingredients such as mechanically deboned poultry (‘pink slime’), sheep’s heart, soy protein, tapioca starch, salt, sugar, MSG, [synthetic] ascorbic acid, citric acid and worst of all, sodium nitrite. Not what I would call ‘survival food’.

        • RainMan

The only good thing about spam is the healthy laugh I get when I see it on a shelf.

only if I am starving, ate it for yrs 50 yrs ago, wouldn’t touch it now w a 10 ft pole. was shocked when I found out that’s what Hawaiians eat and love! So, I have some stored for when I starve.

I would recommend canned chicken from COSTCO.

Chicken wrapped in lettuce or tortilla.
      Chicken and rice
      Chicken and beans
      Chicken and noodle.
