Facing Facts

Usually we speak about spiritual matters and in particular as they relate to end-times. After all our ministry is called “Last Trumpet Blast” and that has every thing to do with the time of the end.

One of the things we have mainly done is to point to events in the world and on the geopolitical stage, and relate them to Bible prophecy. But many downplay these signs. More so because they often do not concern them.

Now with the Covid-19 virus that is different, it concerns all. It is exactly as Jesus foretold: “there will be pestilences in divers places”, that means, “all over the place”.

But for many people it is still incomprehensible why the whole world is in ‘panic mode’ and beginning to get on lock down. So I will deviate a bit from our usual messages and give you some numbers and statistics to put things into perspective.

We look at some factors that make this virus different from other viruses like the flu.
These factors are:

• Contagiousness
• Mortality rate
• Herd immunity (population immunity)

Contagiousness
The contagiousness is also called R0 or R naught. It expresses the number of persons one person is likely to infect. For the seasonal flu that number is 1.3, that means that every infected person infects on average 1.3 other persons. For Covid-19 that is at least somewhere between 2 to just over 3.

Mortality rate

This factor reflects the number of people that die as compared to the number infected. So if for example from every 100 infected people one dies, the mortality rate is 1%.
The mortality rate for seasonal flu is 0.1 percent (1 of every 1000 infected people die from it).
The mortality rate for Covid-19 is 3.4% (according to the WHO), making it more than 30 times deadlier than the seasonal flu. Some countries, like Italy show a significantly higher mortality rate.

Herd immunity

Also called population immunity. This is percentage of immunity among a population. The more people have immunity, the harder it is for a disease to spread. Against seasonal flu there is a reasonable herd immunity, due to vaccines and natural build up (passive immunity). Covid-19 is totally new, that is why it is called the novel-Corona Virus (nCov); that means that there is no immunity among the global population.

It shows the massive impact this disease potentially has and why the measures must be extreme. Unfortunately with most things we are already too late and it is too little.

I hope these facts will fill you with fear. They shouldn’t. And if they do, there is probably another virus that you must be cured from: the virus of sin. That has long infected all of humanity. Find your cure and shelter with Jesus. Be wise and practical in your daily conduct. But be resolute in your spiritual conduct and choice. There is not much time left.
