Ethylene Scrubbers help with Apple CA Storage

Global Cooling Inc. offers ethylene scrubbers for purification of air in cold storage for fresh fruit and vegetables.  The Photocatlytic machine is a completely natural, organic solution, that not only removes ethylene, it also kills mold, mildew, bacteria, and other diseases.

This past season, a number of the scrubbers were used to improve controlled-atmosphere (CA) storage of apples, in New England.  According to one grower:

“We opened the room just before Easter, and the apples looked great. The average pressure was 15 lbs., they were 17 lbs. when we put them into the room this fall.  A 2lb. loss is not bad, some storages opening around the area have pressure readings as low as 10 lbs”.

And another:

“We were reading 3 ppm ethylene Sunday at 10 am and by 8 am the next morning, the reading was < 1 ppm” .

For a 6,000 bushel room, total cost of ownership for a scrubber is about $5 a day, according to Global management.

At this price, it is thought many CA rooms will soon have the scrubbers installed, helping to preserve quality and value for growers and consumers alike.
