Aussie Web Surfers Switch to Mobile

New Australian research data of the first half of 2012 shows a steady growth in the use of mobile devices and tablets for internet research and shopping.

Search Tempo, a Brisbane-based SEO company, has analysed the visitor logs of their clients across several industry sectors and has calculated that the average rate of mobile device visits is now 22%.

“Twelve months ago, only 5-10% of web site visitors were using mobile devices for web browsing,” said John Hacking, Senior Product Manager for Search Tempo. “Now, in some industries such as accommodation, restaurants and home services, the rate is peaking above 35%. This means that if your web site is not mobile-friendly, you are probably losing customers.”

The latest content management systems such as WordPress, now have the capability to switch their design and their content to cater to the tablet and mobile phone visitor.

Visitors using mobile or tablet devices can be automatically redirected to a sub-domain of the main web site that has a simpler, mobile-friendly page design, and if required, reduced content.

The way it works is the web site detects the user agent of the browser. If it’s on a desktop then the normal web site is displayed. If it is a mobile device or tablet, a different web site is displayed.

“If you are looking for a restaurant in your local area using your mobile phone, you really just want to know: Where is it, is it open, what’s on the menu, what does it cost and how do I book?” added Mr Hacking.

“People using a mobile phone are in a hurry and only need the absolute basics before making a decision and taking action.”

Assuming the business has industry-standard web hosting, adding a mobile version of an existing web site can cost as little as $2000.
