Fall 2012 is Predicted The Great Smoky Mountain's Most Colorful Season in Years
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in TN., kick off 2012 fall season after sights of vibrant leaf colors were reported in higher elevations by Park officials.
Sevierville, TN (PRWEB) October 20, 2012
Sep. 23 marked the 2012 fall calendar season for The Great Smoky Mountains when sights of vibrant leaf colors were reported by officials at The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
On October 10th http://www.nps.gov reported: “Fall colors are at or slightly past peak at high elevations in the park. Color is beginning to show in middle elevations. At lower elevation, scattered patches of color have developed, but the majority of trees are still green.”
Fall colors travel down the mountain sides from elevations of 6,000 feet, descending to 2,500 feet covering Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville, TN. The Smoky Mountains leaf season last several weeks spanning from early Sep. through mid Nov. attracting large numbers of sightseers the last three weeks in October.
According to The Department of Tourist Development website http://www.tn.gov, “It is bright sunny days and cool nights – void of freezing temperatures – to ensure that the sugars stay in the leaves, thus providing The leaves vibrant colors.” Leaf goers can now view the best reds throughout the month of October. Colors can still be seen into the early weeks of November, but to a lesser degree.
Visit My Smokies meteorologist, Paul Poteet, reports weather will directly impact how much fall colors sightseers will get to enjoy. With 8 of the next 24 days expected to rain leaves can be expected to keep up longer and with brighter colors. Timing of fall color change depends upon numerous variables. The exact dates of “peak” season is impossible to predict in advance.
