Bridgetown Bucks local currency notes arrive in Portland, Oregon.
Dated: Nov 01, 2012
A local paper currency will soon begin circulating in the Portland area. Each note is backed by dollars on deposit at local institutions. The company’s long term goal is to increase demand for locally owned, made and grown goods & services.
Portland, OR – PDX Currency Corporation, an Oregon nonprofit, announced today that company officials have received physical delivery of the first series of local currency notes called Bridgetown Bucks. $373,500 in face value of Bridgetown Bucks was delivered to the company along with 100 collector proof sheets of uncut notes that will not enter circulation.
The colorful currency comes in four denominations $1, $5, $10 and $20. The back of each note proudly shows a hand draw graphic of a Portland area bridge including: the Burnside Bridge, St. Johns Bridge, Broadway Bridge and the Steel Bridge. The illustrations were completed by local artist Terra Dehart.
The notes were printed by McAra Printing, a division of Canadian Bank Note Company and the polymer substrate material used is very similar to Canadian and Australian government issued bank notes.
Company representative, Carl Mullan said, “The attractive notes are crafted of durable material. It is very hard to tear and since Portland is a wet city most of the year, we made sure these notes will stand up to both rain and the wash cycle without damage. The polymer material makes verification of authenticity very easy. We feel that these notes cannot be successfully counterfeited without this polymer material which is extremely hard to obtain.”
About Bridgetown Bucks
Bridgetown Bucks is a local currency for the Portland area. Participating locally owned and operated merchants accept the notes at a one-to-one ratio with U.S. dollars. 10 Bucks is equal to $10 USD. The main purpose of Bridgetown Bucks is to redirect some of Portland area shoppers’ spending away from big box retailers and into locally owned stores, restaurants and businesses. These notes can be used at participating local Portland merchants or exchanged back into national currency at points around town. This local currency program is not affiliated with any Federal, State or local government.
