Huntington Learning Center Suggests Tutoring to Strengthen Students' College Readiness

ORADELL, NJ–(Marketwire – Dec 5, 2012) – The condition of college and career readiness has improved slightly in mathematics and science while reading and English dropped slightly (between 2008 and 2012), according to the 2012 ACT report, The Condition of College and Career Readiness. The percent of students meeting all four of the ACT’s readiness benchmarks increased by three percent between 2008 and 2012. The report represents 52 percent of all 2012 U.S. high school graduates, approximately 1.66 million.

Dr. Raymond Huntington, chairman and founder of Huntington Learning Center, said that Huntington agrees with the ACT’s three main suggestions for improving college and career readiness:

• Early monitoring and intervention
• Use of student growth modeling to measure progress
• Schools’ maintenance of a comprehensive framework of best practices

“In our experience, early intervention of parents and teachers is ideal, as it allows students to avoid many of the common and most damaging side effects of school struggles — including diminished self-esteem and deep-rooted frustration,” said Dr. Huntington. “While we always encourage parents to take action as soon as they notice their child having school problems, we know from experience that tutoring is an effective path to improving in school — and getting prepared for college — even when a student has been struggling for some time.”

In addition to study skills and subject tutoring, Huntington offers individualized and small group SAT and ACT preparation courses. All Huntington programs for high school students are meant to foster good study habits and help students get ready for college-level academics, said Dr. Huntington.
