Displaced Emperor Penguin Finds New Home with Help from Antarctica Cruise

Global warming has impacted numerous people and animals all across the world. Unfortunately, no one has been impacted more than an emperor penguin by the name of George.

“George was an emperor penguin who lived on an iceberg”, explained Jose Valentine, a spokesperson for the Antarctica cruise. “The iceberg was the perfect home, until it started to melt. There was no where for the penguin to go. That was when the captain of one of our cruises found him.”

The captain of the cruise noticed the displaced penguin alone and scared on the iceberg. It appeared as if the iceberg was melting at speeds faster than normal. The captain took the penguin on board with hopes that he could help him find a new home.

“It was my goal to help the penguin find a new home”, explained Captain John Lakes. “He looked so scared and lost and alone. We took him on board, made him a room that was perfect temperature, and feed him the regular food he normally likes to eat.”

The crew on the ship decided to join in the captain’s quest to help him find the penguin a new home. That was when the plan was developed.

“We as a crew decided to make certain stops at areas that were similar to where the emperor penguin lived”, explained Kelly Timmons, a crew member aboard the Antarctica cruise. “We figured if we stopped at enough places eventually the penguin would find a home.”

The cruise ship would make several overnight stops near icebergs. The crew would take George out to the icebergs and see if he seemed to adapt to his surroundings. Several crew members were tasked with the job of watching the penguin overnight.

“It was a bit discouraging at first”, said Timmons. ‘It appeared that George was never going to find a home. It was not until we stopped at our twelfth iceberg that he found home. It was really impressive.”

George eventually found an iceberg that felt like home. The crew was relieved, but the crew was in for one more surprise on this journey.

“Just as we were pulling away, a group of 15 emperor penguins came to join George”, said Captain John Lakes. “I like to think that they were welcoming George to their community and as a new neighbor. I think George knew there were other penguins on the iceberg and that was why he picked that one, but it was a really nice surprise. I know he won’t be alone anymore.”
