Carman Anthony Giacomantonio, CAV, MD, FRCS(c), is a leading surgical oncologist with Capital District Health Authority in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, which is affiliated with Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Centre. At the Centre, Dr. Giacomantonio is a Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist. His areas of expertise include cancers, particularly melanoma and sarcoma with special interests in metastases in breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and melanoma as well as Peritoneal Carcinomatosis and Gastric malignancies. In addition, he is the Chief of Surgical Services at CEHHA in Truro, Nova Scotia, and an Associate Professor of Surgery at Dalhousie University. He is also head of Nova Scotia’s Surgical Oncology Network and clinical head of the recently announced breast health clinic at the IWK Health Centre. Dr. Giacomantonio is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Canada. Research interests focus in the biology of cancer metastases. The major focus of this research involves study of the natural progression of cancer, the metastatic process, and the role of cancer stem cells in metastasis. Carman Anthony Giacomantonio, CAV, MD, FRCS(c), became a doctor of medicine in 1991 from Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty of Medicine. He interned at Dalhousie University, where he also served his residency training. Dr. Giacomantonio is fellowship trained in surgical oncology at Tom Baker Cancer Center/ University of Calgary. Certified in Oncology, Dr. Giacomantonio is a member of the Canadian Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. In 2009, he received the Nova Scotia Philanthropy Award and in 2011 he was declared Jr. Alumnist of the Year. Further training includes a master’s degree of science (MSc) in Pathology from Dalhousie University. Dr. Giacomantonio attributes his success to working hard and putting his patients first. When not practicing, he dedicates to developing surgical instruments and riding his motorcycle.
