Cardiothoracic Surgeon David J. Cohen, MD, to be Recognized as a 2016 Top Doctor in San Antonio, Texas
David J. Cohen, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon at Alamo Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates, and affiliated with Methodist Hospital and North Central Baptist Hospital, has been named a 2016 Top Doctor in San Antonio, Texas. Top Doctor Awards is dedicated to selecting and honoring those healthcare practitioners who have demonstrated clinical excellence while delivering the highest standards of patient care.
Dr. David J. Cohen is a vastly experienced cardiothoracic surgeon, having been in practice for more than 43 years. His career in medicine began in 1972, when he graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. This was succeeded by an internship and first year general surgery residency at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and then a general surgery residency at the University of Washington, cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and finally a cardiac transplant fellowship with Dr. Bud Frazier at the Texas Heart Institute.
Board certified in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and with more than four decades of high level experience, Dr. Cohen treats a wide range of conditions relating to the heart, thorax and lungs, and he is also renowned as an expert in critical care medicine and surgery. His specialties include surgery to repair the effects of thoracic trauma, as well as heart valve replacement and repair, and chest wall reconstruction.
With his wealth of experience and expertise, Dr. Cohen remains a surgeon in very high demand, and yet he still finds time to help and mentor younger and less experienced cardiothoracic surgeons. When not working he relaxes on his ranch or by horse riding, and he is also a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America. He is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and is currently a Brigadier General in the Texas State Guard and commander of its Medical Brigade. His undoubted expertise and dedication make Dr. David J. Cohen a very worthy winner of a 2016 Top Doctor Award.
On December 31, 2015, Dr. Cohen retired from his practice at Alamo Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates and is pursuing a career change into Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care, an area in which he has been interested for many years since graduating from the U.S. Navy Scuba School when he was on active duty.
